Discovering the Joy of Inclusion: A Look at With Love, From CJ
Many parents and educators recognize the importance of teaching children about acceptance, but it can be challenging to find the right words or stories to spark those meaningful conversations. Enter With Love, From CJ, a children’s book that gently opens the door to understanding autism and other disabilities. Written by Elisha J. Nelson, this heartfelt story follows CJ—her beloved son with autism—through his day-to-day experiences, showing readers the beauty and uniqueness of a child who sees the world differently. By giving children a chance to learn more about autism in a fun and approachable way, the author hopes to encourage curiosity, compassion, and genuine friendship among kids of all abilities.
CJ’s world is painted in a bright and uplifting tone, inviting young readers to explore what it might feel like to experience life in a slightly different manner. Though he might not communicate the same way as other children, CJ’s heart and smile let everyone around him know that he has big ideas, warm feelings, and a desire to play just like anyone else. This gentle approach reminds adults and children alike that it’s okay to befriend a child who has a disability, and that differences should be welcomed rather than feared.
Understanding Autism Through a Child’s Perspective

Through playful illustrations and carefully chosen words, the book gently explains how CJ’s brain works a bit differently. Rather than brushing aside his behaviors or labeling them as “wrong,” young readers learn that these differences are simply another way of experiencing the world. The book also underlines the importance of patience and kindness. When kids see how CJ appreciates a friendly wave or someone asking how he’s doing, they come to realize that simple acts of empathy can go a long way in building confidence and fostering a sense of belonging.
A Mother’s Heart and Hope
The author, Elisha J. Nelson, wears many hats—she is a wife, a mother, an insurance underwriter, and now a children’s book author. Eight years ago, she and her husband learned that their son was autistic. At just two years old, he was diagnosed and identified as non-verbal, which prompted them to begin looking for ways to help him communicate and thrive. Over time, they discovered that with the right resources, such as Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy, CJ could find effective ways to express himself and connect with others.
While the road has not always been easy, Elisha found that sharing her family’s experiences helped her cope with the challenges and celebrate the victories that come with raising a child on the autism spectrum. Each small breakthrough, from a new word to a moment of eye contact, has served as a testament to CJ’s resilience and spirit. With Love, From CJ captures the essence of this journey, illustrating how love and patience can break down barriers and open doors for children with disabilities.
Cultivating Kindness and Acceptance
The heart of With Love, From CJ lies in its message of acceptance and inclusion. Elisha hopes readers will use this book as a springboard to begin conversations with their own children about autism and other disabilities. When parents share CJ’s story, they can emphasize how important it is to show kindness, reach out to those who seem different, and extend an open invitation to play and learn together. These early lessons in compassion equip children with the awareness and empathy they need to become allies for peers who may face additional challenges.
Beyond reading the story, parents can guide children to reflect on times they might have seen a classmate or neighbor acting in ways that seemed unusual. Perhaps someone didn’t respond when spoken to, or seemed overwhelmed by loud noises. By recalling CJ’s experiences, kids can remember that behaviors like these can be a part of living with autism. Rather than looking away or feeling afraid, children can practice understanding and offer a smile or a simple “hello.”
As the author notes, autism is just one of many disabilities that children might encounter. The universal theme of this book encourages readers to be kind to everyone, whether or not those differences are immediately visible. When young readers learn compassion early in life, it fosters a positive outlook that can have a lasting impact on their relationships, communities, and future endeavors.
Ultimately, With Love, From CJ is much more than a story about a child with autism. It’s a testament to the power of friendship, the importance of inclusive communities, and the belief that, despite our differences, everyone has a place in the circle of friendship. By shining a light on CJ’s experiences, Elisha J. Nelson offers an invaluable resource that encourages open dialogue about autism and disabilities—reminding readers of all ages that the world is richer when everyone is accepted, understood, and loved.
We had the privilege of interviewing the author. Here are excerpts from the interview:
Thank you so much for joining us today! Please introduce yourself and tell us what you do.
My name is Elisha Nelson. I am a wife and a mother. My son was diagnosed with autism at the age of 2. I am an insurance underwriter and I am also a children’s book author.
Please tell us about your Book.
My book is called With Love, From CJ. The book is written from my son’s point of view. It is the story of a child with autism who wants others to understand and include him. It is important for children to learn about autism and know that it is ok to be friends with others with disabilities. Autistic children may do things differently, but it is okay to be friends with them.
Please tell us about your journey.
We learned that my son was autistic 8 years ago. He is non-verbal. While there have been challenging times, the journey is rewarding! We have learned how to communicate with our son. My son is thriving and is enrolled in ABA therapy to help him to learn to communicate.
What are the strategies that helped you become successful in your journey?
I don’t have a magic strategy. I am just a mother that will not give up. I am a mother who will advocate for her son so that he can live a meaningful life.
Any message for our readers
I would like readers to learn about autism and other disabilities. I would like readers to encourage their children to accept people with disabilities and treat them with kindness.
Thank you so much, Elisha, for giving us your precious time! We wish you all the best for your journey ahead!
