“Awakening with Ease” by Susmita Barua Is the Perfect Antidote to Modern Distraction

Awakening with Ease: Embracing a Mindful Path to Personal and Collective Freedom

In a fast-paced, often overwhelming world, many people yearn for a simpler, more peaceful life—one that’s grounded in mindfulness and inner awareness. Awakening with Ease by Susmita Barua offers just that—a compassionate, straightforward approach to personal transformation that encourages women leaders, mindful entrepreneurs, immigrants, and all seekers to walk a path of self-discovery and liberation. Drawing on the teachings of Buddhism and her own profound journey, Barua presents a vision for living mindfully in a chaotic world.

A Life-Changing Journey: From Discontent to Self-Awareness

Barua’s story begins in a place many of us know all too well: a stressful, unfulfilling career that drains her energy and steals her joy. As a city planner, she found herself stuck in the relentless cycle of work, deadlines, and expectations. But unlike many, Barua didn’t settle for this life. At age ten, she began questioning whether role models like Einstein or Buddha were more aligned with the life she wanted to lead. This early curiosity about meaning and purpose would shape her destiny.

Twenty-two years later, Barua made a bold decision: she left her city planner job and embarked on a journey of awakening. Inspired by Buddha’s teachings, she set out to find a new path—one rooted in self-awareness, inner peace, and mindful living. This book isn’t just a personal memoir—it’s a guide for anyone longing to break free from the pressures and distractions of modern life and find lasting happiness and contentment.

Living with Love and Intention: Awakening for the Good of All

At the heart of Awakening with Ease is a profound invitation to let go of the false narratives we’ve been taught about power, victimhood, and separation. These narratives—rooted in fear, greed, and ego—often keep us trapped in cycles of suffering. But Barua’s teachings point to a more empowering, love-based paradigm that encourages us to embrace the wisdom of the heart and live with intention.

Barua emphasizes that awakening isn’t just a personal goal; it’s a collective one. To awaken is to recognize our interconnectedness and to live in a way that benefits all beings. By cultivating a heart-centered life, we contribute to the happiness, peace, and harmony of the world around us. Barua doesn’t just talk about spiritual awakening in abstract terms—she offers concrete, actionable steps for how to shift our consciousness and make a difference.

One of these steps is the creation of AWE Circles, local communities where individuals come together to practice mindfulness and support each other on their spiritual journeys. These circles provide a nurturing environment where people can engage in meaningful conversations, explore new ideas, and work together to make a positive impact in their communities. In this way, Barua encourages readers to not only transform their own lives but also to contribute to the collective awakening of society.

The Role of Mindfulness and Meditation in Self-Awareness

A key theme of Barua’s book is the transformative power of mindfulness and meditation. Rather than relying on external sources of validation or success, Barua advocates for a deeper, more intimate knowledge of ourselves. She believes that true wisdom doesn’t come from what we learn in school or from the media—it comes from self-awareness, contemplation, and meditation.

Through mindfulness practices, we begin to observe the workings of our own minds. We see how our thoughts, emotions, and beliefs shape our perceptions of reality. And by developing a deep understanding of ourselves, we can start to break free from limiting patterns and create a life that’s aligned with our highest values.

Barua draws from the ancient wisdom of the Buddha, reminding readers that the path to self-realization requires self-inquiry. By asking ourselves questions like “Who am I?” and “What is the nature of my mind?”, we begin to uncover the layers of conditioning that have shaped us. Through this process of introspection, we become more attuned to our true selves, leading to greater peace, freedom, and emotional well-being.

Creating Change: From Personal Awakening to Collective Transformation

Barua doesn’t stop at personal awakening. She believes that individual growth is intrinsically tied to collective transformation. In a world rife with suffering, injustice, and inequality, it’s not enough to simply work on ourselves—we must also work toward creating a better world for everyone.

This is where Barua’s concept of mindful leadership comes in. As a mindful entrepreneur and leader, Barua believes that we have the power to influence society in profound ways. By practicing ethical, compassionate leadership and fostering environments of care, we can challenge the systems of oppression and division that dominate our world.

Through Awakening with Ease, Barua inspires readers to take their awakening beyond the personal sphere and engage with the world in meaningful, impactful ways. Whether through activism, social awareness, or simply leading by example, each person has the potential to contribute to the collective evolution of humanity.

A Guide to Living with Simplicity, Wisdom, and Compassion

Ultimately, Awakening with Ease is more than just a book—it’s a call to action. It’s a guide to living a life of wisdom, compassion, and simplicity. Barua invites readers to embrace the ancient path of the noble ones, to practice mindfulness and meditation, and to embody the principles of love, kindness, and ethical living.

For those who long for inner peace, freedom, and fulfillment in a world filled with distractions, Awakening with Ease provides a roadmap. Through mindfulness, self-awareness, and a commitment to awakening for the good of all, we can begin to create a life of lasting peace and happiness—both for ourselves and for the world around us. This book offers a simple, direct path to living with ease, wisdom, and compassion—no matter where you are on your journey.

We had the privilege of interviewing the author. Here are excerpts from the interview:

Thank you so much for joining us today! Please tell us about your Book.

This book is based on my personal journey from being a dissatisfied professional city planner and mom in an auto-pilot life to the noble search for wise, mindful living, true freedom, and happiness as a non-monastic lay-person in a world mired with deep suffering, disconnection, war, and injustice. If you deeply long for a life of inner peace, freedom, equanimity, meaning, creativity, compassionate service, and fulfillment in a world of chaos, distraction, abuse of power, and misguided attention, then this book of spiritual liberation and reclaiming the power of your own awareness and wise attention is for you. Knowledge does not come from external and secondary sources as we are educated. The primary source is knowledge of self, mind, and reality through mindful meditation. “Know thyself’ that Socrates said, is actually the ancient path of Arya or noble ones.

Please tell us about your journey.

What my 21 years of schooling and two graduate degrees did not teach me is a deep understanding of my own life, human psychology, and the development of the higher human mind through mindful meditation, which Buddha discovered 2600 years ago. Awareness is inherent within each human being, but we are not taught how to cultivate awareness and wise attention moment by moment, so we develop insight into reality, inner resilience, confidence, and agency without external validation or approval.

What are the strategies that helped you become successful in your journey?

Mainly turning the five senses inward so mind can observe the mind and movement of consciousness. Breath is what joins the mind and body. And noticing body sensations and feelings of pleasure, pain, and dullness through sensory contact helps us see how our habitual impulses of body-mind-speech patterns or Sankharas are formed. When we rest at ease in the gap between thoughts and re-actions or in and out-breath, we can take a pause and slowly change unwholesome ignorant actions to wholesome and skillful wise action.

Thank you so much, Susmita, for giving us your precious time! We wish you all the best for your journey ahead!
