When modern life disappears overnight, what remains becomes far more important than what was lost. Kelly Schweiger explores this idea through a deeply human lens, building a post-apocalyptic world that feels intimate, grounded, and emotionally real.
Her Where the Pines Still Stand universe is set in the Adirondack Mountains, where isolation turns into both a challenge and a lifeline. At the center of it all is the Callahan family, whose Lodge becomes a place of refuge, growth, and difficult decisions as society resets itself.
A Story Rooted in Humanity
Kelly’s storytelling stands apart because it focuses on people rather than spectacle. The collapse is only the beginning. What follows is a careful exploration of relationships, responsibility, and survival without modern support systems.
Readers encounter characters dealing with illness, raising children in uncertainty, and learning to trust again in a fractured world. The series highlights how survival is shaped by everyday choices, not just dramatic events. Faith, family, and quiet strength run through every page.
Last Light: Where It All Begins
Last Light introduces the Callahan family and their carefully built way of life. Gus and Jo have spent years preparing for disruptions, creating a self-sufficient environment that supports multiple generations.

When the power grid fails, their preparation becomes essential. Kelly presents this transition with steady pacing, allowing readers to feel the shift from routine life to uncertainty. The Lodge emerges as a place of safety, yet it also becomes a testing ground for resilience.
The story blends tension with emotional depth, showing how preparation meets reality in ways no one can fully predict.
Winter’s Bite: When Survival Gets Personal
In Winter’s Bite, the story deepens as winter adds pressure to an already fragile situation. Resources begin to thin out, illness spreads, and external threats draw closer.

Kelly explores how stress reshapes relationships. Trust becomes fragile. Every decision carries weight. The Callahans must balance compassion with caution, especially when danger comes not just from nature, but from people pushed to their limits.
This installment feels intense and personal, capturing the emotional cost of long-term survival.
Enduring Fight: Standing Together
Enduring Fight raises the stakes even higher. Nearly a year after the collapse, the Callahans face a growing threat from a powerful Coalition force moving through the region.
Kelly expands the narrative to include alliances and community defense. The Lodge transforms into something stronger, supported by soldiers, farmers, and trusted allies. The focus shifts toward protection and collective strength.
What stands out here is how courage is portrayed. Kelly shows that bravery often comes from love and responsibility rather than fearlessness. The fight is not just for survival, but for the future of the community.
What Remains: Voices of the Next Generation
With What Remains: Children of the Pines Book One, the story shifts toward younger characters. The world has changed, and the next generation must step forward earlier than expected.

The Callahan community has achieved a fragile balance. Markets function. Learning continues. Then a new group, the Harbingers, arrives with promises of order and security.
Kelly explores how these promises influence young minds. Friendships begin to blur lines, and beliefs start to shift. The story raises important questions about leadership, influence, and the direction of rebuilding society.
This perspective adds depth, showing how the future is shaped by those who inherit the aftermath.
A Light in the Dark: Finding Joy Again
A Light in the Dark: A Callahan Christmas offers a warm and reflective pause within the series. Told through the eyes of children, it captures a Christmas celebrated without electricity or modern comforts.

Kelly brings attention to simple traditions. Handmade gifts, shared meals, and storytelling replace commercial celebrations. The Lodge becomes a place filled with laughter and meaning.
This story highlights how joy can still exist even in difficult times. It serves as a reminder that connection often matters more than circumstance.
The Callahan Family Pantry: Stories Through Food
The Callahan Family Pantry takes a different approach by combining practical recipes with storytelling. Kelly invites readers into the kitchen of the Lodge, where food plays a central role in survival and comfort.

The recipes rely on pantry staples, preserved goods, and foraged ingredients. Alongside them are stories that reflect the family’s history and resilience.
This book adds a hands-on dimension to the series. It allows readers to connect with the Callahans beyond the narrative, offering insight into their daily lives.

We had the privilege of interviewing the author. Here are excerpts from the interview:
Thank you so much for joining us today! Please introduce yourself and tell us what you do.
I’m Kelly Schweiger, a post-apocalyptic author and the creator of the Where the Pines Still Stand universe. I write character-driven survival stories centered on family, resilience, and what it really takes to endure when everything falls apart. My books lean into realistic prepper and homesteading elements, chronic illness, strong females, multigenerational characters, found family, and the emotional cost of survival—not just how people live, but why they keep going.
Please tell us about your journey.
I didn’t come into writing from a traditional path. I have dreamed of being an author my entire life. In my 50s, I finally decided to take it seriously and write that novel that has been living in my brain for the last 30+ years. I had published a few children’s books and cookbooks. Dipping my toes in and trying to learn.
So two years ago, I jumped in with both feet, all while managing chronic illness, raising a family, working full-time, and learning the publishing world as I went. What started as one story turned into an entire universe because the characters—and the readers—weren’t ready to let it go. I’ve grown alongside my work, learning not just how to write better stories, but how to build something sustainable and meaningful from the ground up.

What are the strategies that helped you become successful in your journey?
Consistency over perfection has been the biggest one. I kept showing up, even when it wasn’t easy or ideal. I also focused heavily on understanding my audience—what they actually want to feel when they read—and delivering that honestly. I am an enormous fan of this genre. From a business standpoint, I treat writing like a career, not a hobby: studying the market, improving craft, and building a connected body of work instead of one-off books.
Any message for our readers
The stories we tell, and the ones we hold onto, matter more than we realize. Whether you’re reading or writing, there’s value in showing up for something that reflects real life, real struggle, and real hope. You don’t need perfect conditions to create something meaningful. Don’t wait! Start now and grow along the way.
Thank you so much, Kelly, for giving us your precious time! We wish you all the best for your journey ahead!
