Years of caring for other people can leave someone wondering how much of herself she has left. Sheema Jackson’s The Becoming Collection brings that question into the lives of two longtime friends, drawing readers toward a story filled with tenderness, secrets, and the complicated pursuit of peace.
At its heart are Lila and Yasmin, whose friendship began with a grape popsicle during a sweltering summer thirty-one years ago. Since then, they’ve moved through marriage, motherhood, heartbreak, and experiences that have tested their connection. Each knows pieces of the other’s history that belong to an earlier, more vulnerable version of herself.
That kind of familiarity creates its own emotional language. An old friend can remember forgotten dreams, recognize a carefully hidden hurt, or understand why a small moment carries enormous weight. For Lila and Yasmin, their shared past also includes questions they’ve allowed to remain unanswered.
When a Carefully Built Life Begins to Unravel

The turning point arrives at Lila’s fortieth birthday party. A stranger walks through the door and identifies herself as somebody’s wife. Suddenly, a celebration becomes the beginning of a reckoning.
It’s an arresting setup because the disruption happens in a place associated with affection and belonging. Lila is surrounded by people marking a milestone in her life when an unfamiliar woman brings information capable of changing how she understands that life.
From there, the story moves toward memories Lila has kept at a distance. Three gold boxes of cupcakes become connected to different parts of her emotional history. One points toward a dark year she has never spoken about. Another recalls the man who taught her what genuine love could feel like. The third touches the delicate peace she believed she had reached.
The boxes give readers tangible objects to follow through a story of deeply personal revelations. Their presence also connects the birthday gathering to a much wider history, suggesting that the answers Lila needs have roots stretching far beyond that evening.
Several mysteries wait within those roots: a girl who disappeared thirty-one years ago, a name that was supposed to fade from memory, and a three-year silence between Lila and Yasmin. That unexplained separation gives their friendship another layer. Even a relationship built over decades can carry a period that remains difficult to revisit.
Sheema brings these threads together around recognizable concerns. The novel explores marriages shaped by trust, the damage caused by misplaced faith, and the friendships that continue through painful mistakes. Love has an important place here, along with the question of whether someone feels safe enough to receive it.
The theme of generosity gives the story particular resonance. Lila’s journey invites readers to think about what happens when caring becomes a habit that leaves a person exhausted. Giving can feel natural, especially within relationships where someone has always been expected to offer patience, forgiveness, or practical support.
Sheema previously explored a related idea in Mrs. Dubai and the Lavender Tree. That children’s story follows a tree that gives away her leaves to everyone who asks until she has almost nothing remaining. The Becoming Collection carries the concern into adult relationships, where years of devotion can make personal limits difficult to recognize.
Readers drawn to emotionally layered women’s fiction will find a premise that combines intimate struggles with unfolding suspense. The enduring connection between Lila and Yasmin gives those struggles a human center, while the buried questions create anticipation about what their friendship will have to face next.
