Early Faith and Inner Conflict

Pastor LaTrina Slater grew up surrounded by Christian teachings that strongly influenced how she viewed the world. Faith formed the foundation of her beliefs and provided direction for her daily life. Yet as she matured, she began facing a deeply personal conflict that challenged everything she thought she understood about herself.

During her younger years, LaTrina believed her sexuality represented a spiritual flaw. The messages she encountered suggested that her feelings were something that needed correction. Wanting to remain faithful to God, she committed herself to changing what she believed was wrong within her.

She spent years praying, fasting, and seeking spiritual guidance, hoping those efforts would transform her identity. Each attempt came from a sincere desire to live according to her faith. Still, the internal struggle continued, and the sense of shame remained present.

Over time, this emotional battle began affecting several areas of her life. Her confidence weakened, and her spiritual life felt weighed down by constant guilt. She struggled with the belief that she had to choose between being honest about who she was and maintaining a relationship with God.

These experiences later became an important part of the story she shares in her book. By opening up about her past struggles, LaTrina provides readers with a clear and honest look at the emotional toll that such conflicts can create.

Discovering Grace and Spiritual Clarity

A significant shift began when LaTrina approached her faith from a new perspective. Instead of searching for ways to correct herself, she began exploring scripture with fresh curiosity and openness.

Through prayer, study, and personal reflection, she started questioning the assumptions she had carried for so many years. This process led her toward a realization that transformed her understanding of faith.

LaTrina came to believe that the love described throughout Christian teachings had never excluded her. The struggle she experienced came from interpretations shaped by human understanding rather than divine rejection.

This discovery brought a profound sense of relief. Feelings of shame slowly gave way to acceptance, and her faith evolved into something that felt compassionate and life-giving.

For the first time, she felt able to approach God with honesty rather than fear. Her spiritual life became rooted in grace and authenticity. Instead of fighting her identity, she began embracing the belief that she had been created intentionally and with purpose.

This turning point forms one of the central themes of God’s Grace for His Gay Children. The book invites readers to explore how faith can grow when guided by compassion and deeper understanding.

Supporting Others on Similar Journeys

After reaching a place of reconciliation in her own life, LaTrina felt a strong calling to support others facing similar struggles. Many people experience deep tension between their spiritual beliefs and their identity. Some feel isolated or uncertain about how to move forward.

Through her book and her ongoing work, LaTrina offers encouragement to individuals who want to connect with God while remaining true to themselves. Her message reminds readers that healing often begins with honesty and self-acceptance.

LaTrina combines affirming theology with compassion-centered coaching and trauma-aware spiritual care. Her goal is to help people find emotional healing while strengthening their spiritual lives.

She also hopes to foster understanding within Christian communities. Many believers want to support their children, friends, or family members but may struggle to understand their experiences. By sharing her personal journey, LaTrina provides insight that encourages empathy and thoughtful dialogue.

Her work reflects a belief that faith communities can grow stronger when they lead with compassion and openness. The conversations she promotes create space for healing and mutual understanding.

God’s Grace for His Gay Children offers more than a personal testimony. It presents a message of hope for readers navigating complex questions about faith and identity.

We had the privilege of interviewing the author. Here are excerpts from the interview:

Thank you so much for joining us today! Please introduce yourself and tell us what you do.

I’m LaTrina, a grateful Christian woman who also has a wife. I’ve worked in mental health for the last two decades. I’ve more recently answered a call to become a pastor, something that I did not see coming. I’m becoming clearer that this grace that I found needs to be shared with others within and outside of the LGBTQIA community.

Please tell us about your journey.

I received Christ in my freshman year of college, and I’ve walked closely with Him since then. For decades, I struggled to reconcile my sexuality with my faith. I didn’t even admit that I was gay for many, many years. I spent a lot of time and energy trying to change, praying to change, and being completely disgusted with myself for not being able to change who I was attracted to. In my late 30s, I finally came to terms with the fact that my sexuality wasn’t some mistake or some smear that needed to be removed. I found peace with God, and now I’m living with more internal and external peace than I’ve ever experienced. I want this for everybody.

What are the strategies that helped you become successful in your journey?

The only thing that helped me was being able to silence what I was taught and earnestly seek God for myself, about myself. Then I was able to perceive and receive His amazing grace. Prayer, a deeper study of the Bible, and therapy helped me tremendously with this.

Any message for our readers?

I want every reader to know and experience God’s unconditional love. I hope reading about my arduous journey can help someone find their way to God’s grace. Whether you’re in the LGBTQIA community, or you have a relative or loved one, or you just want to bridge the divide and truly understand how someone can be queer and at peace with God, this book is for you.

Thank you so much, Pastor LaTrina, for giving us your precious time! We wish you all the best for your journey ahead!
