Harlem, NYC, is a neighborhood that has long been a symbol of cultural richness, diversity, and resilience. This area, renowned for its vibrant history and unique community, faces an ongoing threat—displacement. As gentrification sweeps through New York City, the essence of Harlem, its people, and its culture is at risk of being lost. In this pivotal moment, Young Atlas, a media company founded in 2018 by Kai Cogsville, has emerged as a crucial voice for the Harlem community. Dedicated to preserving the neighborhood’s diversity and cultural heritage, Young Atlas uses its platform to address the challenges of gentrification and displacement head-on.
Defending Harlem: The Need to Preserve Diversity
New York City is celebrated for its diversity—a city where different races, cultures, and economic backgrounds coexist, creating a rich, dynamic environment. Harlem, in particular, has been a cornerstone of this diversity, home to a predominantly African-American community with deep cultural roots. However, as gentrification continues to reshape neighborhoods across the city, Harlem is experiencing significant changes. Long-time residents are being pushed out, local businesses are being replaced, and the community’s unique character is under threat.
Young Atlas recognizes the importance of preserving this diversity. The company’s content, including the video “Displacement in Harlem: How the Community Can Fight Back,” highlights the ongoing challenges faced by Harlem’s residents. This video calls for necessary government changes to protect the community, emphasizing that preserving Harlem’s diversity is not just a matter of cultural significance but is also vital for the identity of New York City as a whole. The fight to maintain Harlem’s unique character is a fight for the soul of the city, and Young Atlas is leading the charge.
A New Direction: From Concerts to a Media Powerhouse
Young Atlas wasn’t always a media company focused on social issues. It originally started as a concert promotion business, bringing music and entertainment to New York City’s lively scene. However, as Kai Cogsville and his team observed the changes occurring in Harlem and the lack of media coverage surrounding these issues, they realized there was a greater need. The company pivoted, transforming into a media outlet dedicated to producing content that shines a light on the struggles and successes of Harlem and its residents.
Today, Young Atlas covers a wide range of topics, including gentrification, Black excellence, finance, and entertainment. Their content is not only informative but also deeply connected to the community. By telling the stories that mainstream media often overlooks, Young Atlas has established itself as a trusted voice for Harlem. This shift from concert promotions to media production reflects the company’s commitment to addressing the issues that matter most to the community it serves.
Creating Platforms for Advocacy and Change
In addition to producing compelling content, Young Atlas has taken significant steps to empower the Harlem community. One of the company’s most notable initiatives is the creation of the @defend.harlem platform on Instagram. This platform is dedicated to fighting displacement and celebrating Harlem’s rich cultural heritage. It serves as a space for community members to share their stories, voice their concerns, and organize efforts to protect their neighborhood.
Young Atlas’ advocacy extends beyond social media. The company offers creative services to businesses throughout the tristate area, including podcast production, video/photo production, and social media management. By providing these services, Young Atlas supports local enterprises while ensuring that the stories and voices of Harlem continue to be heard. The company’s efforts to build platforms for change demonstrate its deep commitment to the community and its belief in the power of media to drive social progress.

The company has had the privilege of interviewing legends in various fields, including Steve Lobel, the manager of Nipsey Hussle; Trax NYC, the legendary jeweler featured in the movie Uncut Gems; and Dr. Yusef Salaam, Councilman and member of the Central Park Five. These interviews provide valuable insights into the experiences and challenges faced by these icons, offering a deeper understanding of the issues impacting Harlem.
Through these conversations, Young Atlas not only amplifies the voices of those who have shaped the community but also creates a bridge between Harlem’s past, present, and future. These interviews are more than just stories; they are a testament to the enduring spirit of Harlem and the importance of preserving its legacy.

As Harlem continues to face the pressures of gentrification and displacement, the work of Young Atlas is more important than ever. The company’s dedication to preserving Harlem’s cultural heritage and advocating for its residents has made it a vital force in the community.
