Mastering Real-World Self-Defense: Inside Dr. Antonio N. Sherman’s Take-5 Concept
Dr. Antonio N. Sherman’s Take-5 Self-defense Concept: Nikida’s Mudo-Kan Waza-Ryu Martial Art isn’t your average self-defense guide—it’s a high-impact, real-world strategy drawn from decades of field experience. With a career spanning over four decades in both military and civilian protection, Dr. Sherman doesn’t just teach theory—he’s lived every move he writes about.
The Take-5 Concept wasn’t born in a dojo or a boardroom. It emerged from hands-on scenarios, from executive protection work to military deployments. Sherman served as a Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Army for 17 years and worked in high-level security roles—including assignments under the United Nations Command and personal escort missions for dignitaries and military leaders. His philosophy is clear: survival isn’t about perfection—it’s about preparation. And preparation means knowing how to neutralize a threat in five seconds or less.
Breaking the Mold
In his book, Sherman argues against the rigid boundaries of traditional martial arts training. He’s studied both foreign and domestic fighting systems, and over time, one truth became unavoidable—relying on a single, structured style limits your adaptability in real-life situations.
The streets aren’t a dojo. Attackers don’t follow rules. A technique that works in practice can crumble when a threat doesn’t move the way you’ve trained for. That’s the critical gap Sherman wanted to fill. The Take-5 method strips away unnecessary complexities and focuses on direct, actionable defense maneuvers that work under pressure. No fluff, no guesswork—just raw efficiency.
The book teaches that hand-to-hand combat engagements should last no longer than five seconds. Why? Because in close-quarters combat, time isn’t a luxury. The longer a confrontation drags out, the more risk there is. Sherman’s methodology is designed to help you win quickly and decisively, so you can stay alive, protect others, and walk away in one piece.
What Makes Take-5 So Different
This isn’t a how-to guide packed with endless choreographed movements. Take-5 Self-defense Concept is a mindset shift. It prioritizes:
- Speed and effectiveness: You don’t get timeouts in a real fight. Sherman’s approach teaches you to react and resolve in under five seconds—turning hesitation into instinct.
- Adaptive techniques: The system isn’t locked into one martial art. It draws from many, creating a hybrid model that works regardless of the attacker’s style.
- Mental conditioning: Sherman emphasizes decision-making under stress. In his world, if you’re still thinking, you’re already behind. The Take-5 approach helps hardwire your responses, so there’s no pause between danger and action.
Every detail in the book reflects Sherman’s first-hand knowledge. From defensive angles to disengagement tactics, it’s clear this isn’t textbook material—it’s field-tested survival wisdom.

We had the privilege of interviewing Dr. Antonio N. Sherman. Here are excerpts from the interview.
Hi Dr. Antonio, It’s great to have you with us today! Please share about yourself with our readers.
Hello, I am a multi-talented artist, a retired U.S. Army veteran, and an active executive protection specialist. Additionally, I am an accomplished martial artist and a published author in various genres.
Please tell us about your book.
As a dedicated martial artist, I am deeply committed to the arts, having studied both foreign and domestic styles, both as a fighter and a teacher. I have learned not to confine myself to one particular style of fighting or art form, as doing so imposes limitations instead of providing freedom. Relying strictly on established boundaries and guidelines can be counterproductive, especially since real-world threats do not adhere to predictable patterns. This rigidity can render years of training ineffective. Survival doesn’t solely favor the fittest; it favors those who are prepared.
As a trained executive protection specialist, it is vital that I am confident in my skills during close-quarters combat (CQC). If I have to think about what to do in a critical moment, it’s already too late; I would be playing catch-up.
I must emphasize that the “Take-5” concept of self-defense has been evaluated in real-world situations by both myself and other active protection specialists. The “Take-5” concept suggests that any engagement in hand-to-hand combat should be resolved as quickly as possible. Each aspect of this concept is designed to ensure efficiency and effectiveness.
Please share your journey with our readers.
Honestly, that’s the subject of my next book. It’s not solely about the destination; it’s about everything that happens along the way. Moreover, my journey is still in progress.
What are the strategies that helped you become successful in your journey?
The strategies that have helped me the most are discipline and passion. I never view a closed door as a dead end. If a door closes, I look for a window; if a window closes, I search for another door; and if both are closed, I forge my own path.
Any message for our readers?
For the martial arts audience, this book explores the freedom of expression within the martial arts. However, there’s also a section included that speaks to others—prepare yourself; it’s impactful.
Never give up on your dreams. Believe in yourself, even when no one else does. It’s your dream, not theirs, and don’t let anyone dictate what success means to you.
Thank you so much, Dr. Antonio, for giving us your precious time! We wish you all the best for your journey ahead!
