We had the pleasure of interviewing the author. Here are excerpts from the interview:
Hi, Please introduce yourself and tell us what you do.
I’m Khadijah Diallo, a writer, a teacher, a dreamer, and someone who finds liberation through storytelling. Originally from Senegal and residing in the US, I’ve been captivated by the power of writing since I was ten years old. Fuelled by a vivid imagination and supported by my family, especially my grandmother, who shared my love for exploring tales, I embarked on a journey that started with poetry and folktales. Growing up as a book nerd, I developed a deep appreciation for literature.
Please tell us about your book Guido’s Tales.
This book is a continued love letter to my Grandma Guido, who the book is named after. She is the love of my life. She raised me, nurtured me, and loved me. When the idea of a children’s book came about, it was only fitting that it would be tied to her. This book is a tribute to all grandparents and a manifestation of little me’s world of wonder.
Please tell us about your journey.
My ultimate goal is to create spaces where African stories can be reclaimed and shared. I aspire to make a lasting impact, contributing to a chain of dreamers, facilitating opportunities, and ensuring that artists are not denied their chance to soar. Although my work resonates with both children and adults, my heart truly gravitates towards children. Having spent many years working with them, I find that they inspire me endlessly, and it’s truly humbling to provide them with a positive light in which to be seen.
What are the strategies that helped you become successful in your journey?
What has always helped me is my faith, God is Everything to me and my overall relentlessness in showing up as I am, being a forever dreamer, and being extremely serious about the things that inspire me.
