Whispers of War in Vasarea
In Foes of Hope, Brendon James draws open the curtains on a land that feels both familiar and strange. The continent of Vasarea carries the elegance of a Victorian era yet hums with the danger of rebellion. The kingdom of Eirene—once an unshakable power—now stands on a knife’s edge. Behind its crumbling walls and broken promises, civil war tightens its grip, and a shadowy cult known as the Harbingers grows bolder by the day.
Amid this chaos stands the Arete family, bound together by blood but split apart by ambition. Each sibling walks a path littered with impossible choices, and each step threatens to tip the balance of the entire realm. In James’ hands, the story is both sweeping and intimate, showing that the fiercest battles are often the ones fought in silence.
The Siblings’ Crossroads
Pistis, the youngest daughter, finds herself in the most harrowing position—deciding which of her kin she can save and which must be left to their fate. Memories of her own mistakes weigh heavily, and the sins she’s tried to forget demand to be confronted. Her decisions will not only shape her future but could also carve the destiny of Eirene itself.
Cadfael, the charismatic Prince, moves through the halls of power with practiced ease. But charm is a fragile shield when the kingdom’s foundations tremble. Every choice he makes now could either reinforce those foundations or send them cracking beyond repair. His role in the unfolding conflict forces him to balance loyalty with survival, knowing that both cannot always coexist.
And then there’s Yagmur, often judged, often doubted, carrying the quiet burden of addiction. Her struggle is more than a private battle—it’s a war that shapes how she navigates alliances and betrayals in a court where deception is as common as candlelight. She must decide who deserves her trust, all while wrestling with the pull of her own demons.
The Pulse of a Kingdom
Eirene is not simply a setting—it’s a living force in the novel. Brendon James gives readers a sense of a place that has known grandeur and now faces the threat of losing it all. Smoke curls from chimneys in towns braced for conflict, while in palace corridors, the air crackles with whispered deals and unspoken threats.
The Harbingers rise as a chilling presence, their motives hidden behind layers of secrecy. Their growing influence casts a long shadow, touching every corner of the kingdom. The tension between old power and dangerous change keeps the plot taut, as every alliance feels temporary and every victory seems to demand an unforgiving price.
James crafts this world with a level of detail that makes it easy to imagine life beyond the page. The traditions, the politics, the streets and markets—all breathe with their own rhythm, drawing readers deeper into Vasarea’s tangled web.
Threads of Identity and Resilience
While the novel paints grand scenes of political intrigue and rebellion, it never loses sight of its human core. Pistis’ search for meaning in a life shaped by sacrifice mirrors the way many people grapple with their own sense of worth. Yagmur’s fight against addiction carries a raw honesty, capturing the reality of setbacks and the grit it takes to move forward. Cadfael’s dilemmas reflect the crushing weight of responsibility when every choice comes with a cost no one else can pay.
These struggles bring the sweeping war into sharp focus. The stakes may be high for the kingdom, but they’re just as high for the hearts and minds of the characters. The question that lingers isn’t simply who will win the war—it’s who these siblings will become when it’s over.
Brendon James’ Creative Journey
Brendon James’ path to writing began in college, where inspiration from authors like V.E. Schwab, JJ Sherwood, and Joe Abercrombie lit a spark that wouldn’t fade. In 2014, he began shaping what would become Foes of Hope, building a world that could resonate on multiple levels—both through its intricate politics and through the personal battles of its characters.
By day, James teaches high school English, guiding students through the power of language and storytelling. By night, he bartends at a performing arts center in Texas, an environment where performance, conversation, and atmosphere intertwine. Those experiences, both in the classroom and behind the bar, seep into his writing—fueling his ability to create dialogue that feels alive and relationships that feel layered.
Stepping Into the Story
Readers can find Foes of Hope on Amazon and Goodreads, ready to take them into a kingdom where every decision counts and no allegiance is guaranteed. Brendon James delivers a debut filled with danger, heartache, and moments of quiet courage, all set against the backdrop of a richly imagined world.
In Vasarea, hope and ruin often walk side by side. The Arete siblings must choose their paths, knowing that some choices can’t be undone and some sacrifices will echo for generations. For those drawn to stories of loyalty, ambition, and the struggle to find purpose in a world pulling itself apart, this is a journey worth taking.
We had the privilege of interviewing Brendon James. Here are excerpts from the interview.
Hi, It’s great to have you with us today! Please share about yourself with our readers.
My name’s Brendon, and I wear many hats. I am an English and Special Education teacher, all the while working as a valet and bartender. Any little time I find to write has been sporadic, to say the least.
Please tell us about your journey.
While I was in college in 2014, I began reading more and eventually came across A Darker Shade of Magic by V.E. Schwab, and Kings or Pawns by JJ Sherwood. Both of these stories really resonated with me, and I said, “I want to create my own world.” It took me a lot longer than I expected, 11 years to be exact, but better late than never, right? Ever since I began writing, and going through different stages of my life, my book changed a lot too, from the settings to the characters. It became a huge passion for mine, no matter how frustrating the writing and editing process was. As I changed, so did the book. It was quite a journey, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything else.
What are the strategies that helped you become successful in your journey?
Just never giving up. No matter how harsh the criticism was from my beta readers, I knew it was to help make my story stronger. Remaking my latest drafts and figuring out how to connect all the branching storylines was a challenge, but the payoff was definitely worth it.
Any message for our readers?
I hope that there’s at least one character, one situation in my book, or any book for that matter, that impacts you in a positive way.
Thank you so much, Brendon, for giving us your precious time! We wish you all the best for your journey ahead!
