Today, we are interviewing Peter G. Uliano, a Security and Law Enforcement Professional, Actor, and published Author. He is the founder of a training and news company called “OpDef.”
Please tell us something about yourself.
I started my career as a Bail Bondsman in Bronx, NY, and later became a Federal Officer.
How did you get into what you do right now? Please tell us more about your journey.
I got started when I was just out of high school. I was offered a job at a Bail Bonds office by someone I knew who asked me to paint the office for her. This person saw something in me and asked me to manage the office in her absence. After that, I got licensed and started my Bail Bondsman career, which later led to other things and eventually where I am today.
Who are your role models?
My role models vary a great deal. It depends on what I am doing and who, in my opinion, is the subject matter expert in that area. I like good people who do good things. Helpful people, people with a good heart who genuinely care.
What inspires you?
I am inspired by my Family, My Wife, and my Children, first and foremost. There is no better inspiration than aspiring to be great for your family and those you love.
Please tell us about your company.
The new company that I am building is called OpDef. It will focus on training, education, and entertainment in practical security practices for businesses and personal life directly from career professionals. My book on court security x-ray machines was well received, so we decided to deliver more but focused on the individuals and businesses, not in a security niche. So they can understand concepts and threats they might face in a real-life situation.
Which social media channels work best for promoting your work?
I don't use Facebook plain and simple its an invasion of personal privacy/security and not generally a good idea. I do, however, use Instagram, which is owned by Facebook but for professional purposes. I also have a Twitter but rarely use it.
What's your greatest fear?
My greatest fear would have to be dying without setting my Wife and Children up for success in my absence. Not that my wife is not very capable; she is. Just that if something were to happen to me, I would want them not to have to worry about anything else like bills, mortgage, etc. I also make sure I have tangible assets to hand down to my children.
Looking back, what's one thing you wish you understood better before you ever got started?
That believe it or not, most people do not have your best interest in mind. I know it's cynical and pessimistic, but when someone offers you something, you should always ask yourself what's in it for them. This goes for all businesses and coworkers.
What are the strategies that helped you become successful in your journey?
Learning, always learning. I take every training opportunity available to me. I also try to apply everything I learn so I can better grasp concepts. You can learn something from everyone, even if it's what not to do.
What keeps you going when things get tough?
As I said previously, with the inspiration aspect…My Family.
