Get ready for an exclusive glimpse into the world of musician Oscar Biggs as we had the pleasure of interviewing him today. Here are the captivating excerpts from our conversation.
In your official bio, there is said that hip-hop music offered you an outlet for repressed anger from a difficult childhood. How did expressing yourself through rap help you work through challenging emotions?
Oscar: Putting my thoughts and feelings into rhymes was a way for me to gain perspective and rise above what I was going through. Translating those raw emotions into creative lyrics and flows helped me process them in a constructive way instead of acting out. Music has always been therapeutic for me.
Who were some of your earliest influences that inspired you to start rapping?
Oscar: Big L and Lord Finesse were two of my favorites as a kid. Their witty punchlines, wordplay, and no-holds-barred style resonated with me. They inspired me to pick up freestyling around 2014.
You chose your stage name Oscar Biggs as a tribute to your late grandfather. How important was your grandfather in your life and development as an artist?
Oscar: My grandfather Oscar fulfilled the father figure role in my life during my formative years. He always supported me and encouraged me to follow my passions. Choosing to honor his memory through my stage name is a way of keeping his spirit with me as I pursue my music career. I wouldn’t be the man or artist I am today without his guidance and love.
Your performance opening for Necro in 2017 was a breakthrough moment. How did that opportunity come about, and what did you learn from the experience?
Oscar: Necro heard about me through the local Montreal hip-hop scene and invited me to open for him. It was my first major show, and the hugely positive reception gave me the confidence to fully dedicate myself to music. I learned that hard work and perseverance pay off, and to never stop pushing to achieve your dreams.
“Boomerang” was an international collaboration shot in Turin, Italy. What was it like working with talent from all over the world?
Oscar: Collaborating with creators from different countries and cultures was an amazing experience. We were able to combine our diverse skills, perspectives, and styles to make something greater than the individual parts. Music and art transcend boundaries, and “Boomerang” is a testament to that. I’m looking forward to more international collaborations in the future.
How would you describe your style and sound as an artist?
Oscar: I characterize my style as uncompromising, gritty boom-bap hip hop. My sound reflects the hardships of my past merged with hope and triumph over adversity. I aim for music that moves people with a message of perseverance and personal growth. Lyrics are a priority in my songs over anything superficial or vain. I want my music to inspire and empower listeners the way hip-hop empowers me.
What’s next for Oscar Biggs? What are your future goals and plans for your career?
Oscar: I’m focused on releasing new singles and music videos, touring, and building my fanbase. My goal is to become a leader of a new generation that values substance over superficiality in music. I want to show that boom bap is alive and relevant and inspire other artists to create from a place of passion and meaning. A major label deal would be a fat opportunity, but only if it happened on my terms, otherwise, I’m determined to achieve success on my own. The future is bright and September will find me in Turin, Italy!
