Breaking Barriers: Unveiling the Strength in “UNMUTED” by Danielle Robinson
Tech is often seen as an innovative and dynamic sector, yet it can also reflect deeply ingrained issues of inequality and exclusion. Danielle Robinson’s debut book, “UNMUTED: A Black Woman’s Voice in Tech,” courageously addresses these challenges head-on, blending personal narratives with engaging fictional elements to deliver an impactful message of courage, empowerment, and authenticity.
Confronting the Unseen Struggles
Robinson brings readers face-to-face with the unspoken realities Black women frequently encounter within the tech industry. Despite a public image of inclusivity and progressiveness, tech spaces often conceal a landscape riddled with microaggressions, systemic biases, and emotional fatigue. Through compelling storytelling, Robinson vividly portrays experiences of being routinely overlooked and undervalued—situations that resonate deeply with many readers.
These narratives are not only powerful; they’re deeply relatable. Robinson thoughtfully highlights the internal toll taken by these continual battles, providing a clear window into the draining effects of persistent bias. Her accounts encourage honest reflection and acknowledgment of the emotional cost associated with navigating professional spaces that weren’t built to accommodate or celebrate diverse perspectives.
Embracing Power Through Authenticity

Robinson’s narrative passionately asserts that true empowerment arises not from silence or conformity but from authenticity and assertiveness. Her inspiring insights guide readers toward rejecting restrictive expectations, instead advocating self-care, joy, and supportive community as powerful forms of resistance and sources of personal growth.
She emphasizes sisterhood as fundamental in building resilience and sustaining emotional well-being. Robinson skillfully demonstrates how creating connections and community within professional spaces not only fosters collective strength but is indispensable for long-term success and personal fulfillment.
Building New Foundations
Perhaps most striking is Robinson’s call for proactive, transformative change within tech. She boldly encourages readers not to merely strive for inclusion within established structures but instead to actively shape entirely new spaces. Robinson advocates for creative disruption, urging readers to move beyond the traditional approach of simply seeking acceptance, and toward actively crafting environments that celebrate diversity.
In “UNMUTED,” readers will find a roadmap filled with actionable strategies and genuine wisdom. Robinson draws from her extensive expertise, providing practical advice aimed at empowering Black women to navigate—and ultimately reshape—the professional landscape. She challenges readers to recognize their own power in creating innovative, inclusive professional communities.

We had the privilege of interviewing Danielle Robinson. Here are excerpts from the interview.
Hi Danielle, It’s great to have you with us today! Please share about yourself with our readers.
Hi, I’m the author of UNMUTED: A Black Woman’s Voice in Tech. I’m also the founder and CEO of Cyber Boss Consulting, a cybersecurity firm dedicated to protecting organizations, especially those in healthcare and government, from today’s evolving threats.
My work blends technical expertise with lived experience. I come from a nontraditional background, and I know firsthand what it’s like to enter this industry as a single mother just trying to get a foot in the door. Since then, I’ve grown into a cybersecurity leader, built a firm from the ground up, mentored hundreds of aspiring professionals, and created training programs to help others break into tech.
UNMUTED is deeply personal to me. It’s a powerful reflection on what it means to exist, resist, and thrive as a Black woman in spaces that weren’t designed for us. Through this book, I hope to amplify voices that are often overlooked and inspire the next generation to speak up, take up space, and rewrite the narrative.
Please tell us about your journey.
I started as a single mother with two kids, doing everything I could to stay afloat. I worked as an investigator during the day and drove Uber at night. Life was hard, but I wanted more for myself and my children. So, I went back to school and earned my master’s degree in digital forensics and cybersecurity investigations.
Eventually, I shared my story on LinkedIn. That post went viral and opened doors I never imagined. Leaders across the cybersecurity industry reached out with mentorship and job offers. I accepted an opportunity from someone who didn’t just hire me. He believed in me. That belief changed everything.
Cybersecurity gave me the tools to change my life. It gave me the means to put my son through flight school. At 17, he was a private pilot. At 18, he is now working towards his commercial license. That kind of generational impact came from one person giving me a chance.
But my journey wasn’t smooth. I faced microaggressions, doubt, and disrespect. I was once told I wasn’t capable of doing the job. That crushed me at the time, but it also pushed me to prove myself. A few years later, that same person told me he was proud of me.
Over time, I stepped into leadership, mentored others, and launched my own cybersecurity firm. My first major contract with a healthcare organization helped fund The Lab, a hands-on mentorship program that trains future cybersecurity professionals.
And that brings me to UNMUTED.
This book was born from everything I’ve experienced. The struggles, the breakthroughs, the victories. It’s not just about my voice. It’s about making space for Black women in tech to be heard, respected, and seen. For every woman who has felt overlooked or underestimated, UNMUTED is a reminder that your story matters. Your voice matters. And we will no longer be silent.
What are the strategies that helped you become successful in your journey?
One of the biggest strategies that helped me succeed was being willing to start where I was with what I had. I didn’t wait for the perfect time or the perfect opportunity. I was working full-time, raising two kids, and driving Uber at night, but I still made space to go back to school and invest in myself. That mindset of progress over perfection kept me moving forward.
Another key strategy was using my voice. When I shared my story on LinkedIn, I wasn’t trying to go viral. I was just being honest. But that transparency opened doors. It connected me with people who saw my potential and wanted to help. From that moment on, I learned the power of visibility. Closed mouths don’t get fed. Speaking up changed everything.
I also stayed focused on building real relationships. Mentorship was huge for me. The man who gave me my first big break didn’t just hire me. He trained me and poured into me. I took that same approach and paid it forward. I’ve mentored countless others because I believe success is meant to be shared.
Lastly, I stayed true to my purpose. There were times I was underestimated, disrespected, or doubted, but I never let those experiences define me. I used them to fuel my growth. And when I launched Cyber Boss Consulting and later created The Lab, I made sure both were rooted in something bigger than me.
Success for me was never just about climbing the ladder. It was about building a ladder for others to climb too. Through my literature, my goal is to help other women see that their voice and their journey are powerful tools for change.
