In the realm of psychological thrillers, few books manage to truly captivate and bewilder their audience. Trey Claybrooke’s “Be True To Yourself” achieves just that, offering readers a deep dive into the fractured psyche of its protagonist against a backdrop of chilling suspense and mystery. With its intricate plot and complex characters, this novel is a standout piece in modern crime fiction, exploring the themes of reality, identity, and the moral consequences of one’s actions.
A Haunting Plot of Discovery and Despair
At the heart of “Be True to Yourself” is Detective Donovan Harris, a seasoned law enforcement officer in Charlotte, North Carolina. Harris finds himself embroiled in a murder investigation that quickly spirals into a terrifying journey through a fragmented reality. As each new victim reveals a cryptic clue, Harris is drawn deeper into a killer’s twisted game, where the lines between the past and the present blur alarmingly.
The novel begins with what seems like a straightforward murder but soon evolves into a complex web of deceit and madness. The killer, whose identity remains as elusive as his motives, selects victims with haunting precision, weaving a tale of terror that is intimately linked to the detective’s own past. This connection forces Harris to confront his deepest fears and doubts, challenging his perception of truth and justice.
Characters Steeped in Complexity
Trey Claybrooke masterfully crafts characters with depth and authenticity. Donovan Harris is portrayed not just as a detective but as a man teetering on the brink of losing himself. His struggles with his sanity are portrayed with a palpable intensity that drives the narrative forward. The inclusion of Elise, a voice from his past, serves as a poignant reminder of the things Harris stands for, grounding his character amidst the chaos.
Supporting characters, such as Harris’s wife, Jessie, and his partner, Al Griggs, add layers to the story, each bringing their own perspectives and emotional baggage to the unfolding drama. Their interactions with Harris provide insight into his character, revealing a man torn between duty and personal turmoil.
A Twist on Traditional Thriller Elements
“Be True to Yourself” stands out for its innovative use of the psychological thriller format. Claybrooke eschews typical genre tropes, opting instead for a narrative that bends time and reality. The setting of 1993 Charlotte is more than just a backdrop; it becomes a character in its own right, with each location within the city playing a critical role in the progression of the story.
The novel’s pace is relentless, with each chapter peeling back layers of mystery only to reveal deeper enigmas. The use of a non-linear timeline enhances the suspense, keeping readers guessing about what is real and what might be a mere fragment of Harris’s increasingly unreliable perspective.
An Inspirational Journey Behind the Scenes
Adding to the allure of “Be True to Yourself” is the personal story of Trey Claybrooke himself. A lifelong resident of North Carolina and a newcomer to the literary scene, Claybrooke’s journey from short story writer to published novelist is an inspiring tale of perseverance and passion. His decision to foster children and provide a safe, nurturing home mirrors the themes of love and protection in his novel, making his work all the more poignant.
Conclusion
“Be True to Yourself” is more than just a thriller; it is a psychological exploration into the nature of reality and the darkness that can lie hidden within one’s soul. Trey Claybrooke’s novel is a compelling read for anyone who loves a story that challenges their perceptions and stays with them long after turning the last page. As Claybrooke’s debut novel, it promises great things from this talented writer and sets a high standard for psychological thrillers.
We had the privilege of interviewing the Author. Here are excerpts from the interview:
Hi, Please introduce yourself and tell us about what you do.
I am Trey Claybrooke. I am a native of North Carolina and reside in Charlotte. I have written short stories all my life. It was my son that convinced me to put some of my ideas together and create this book. He has been a big inspiration for me. My kids are grown, and I currently foster kids who need a stable home and a place to be safe. I hope to inspire them to strive to be what they want.
Please tell us about your book.
The concept of “Be True To Yourself“ has lingered in the recesses of my mind for years, and seeing it materialize into a book has been deeply gratifying. This tale delves into a murder investigation with an intriguing twist: the killer plucks victims from the past and deposits them in the present. Set against the backdrop of 1993 Charlotte, North Carolina, the story isn’t conventional time travel but rather a fragmentation of reality.
Our protagonist is Detective Donovan Harris, whose backstory reveals a childhood in rural South Carolina, as the only child of a farmer and his wife. To grow their family, his parents exposed Donovan to foster and adoptive siblings who instilled in him a respect for diversity and a strong sense of justice. These early experiences shape Donovan into a man unafraid to fight for what’s right, even at personal cost.
In 1993, Donovan, now a detective for the sheriff’s office, stumbles upon a seemingly routine crime scene, unaware that reality is already beginning to splinter. Each new victim sends a chilling message from the killer, placing Donovan squarely in the crosshairs of a madman’s game. As he unravels the clues, Donovan races against time to prevent further loss of life.
As the investigation unfolds, Donovan finds himself confronting unexpected shifts in his own life, forcing him to make difficult choices and muster the courage to protect those he holds dear. Readers are invited to join him on this suspenseful journey, brimming with unexpected twists and turns that culminate in a finale designed to leave them questioning reality itself.
Please tell us about your journey.
I am an engineer by trade. My job involves analysis and reports. It can be fulfilling but not creative. My son and I often will dissect a movie or book and talk about it for hours on end. He and I had considered collaborating on one of his ideas. He is the one who suggested I take my writings and run with them.
What are the strategies that helped you become successful in your journey?
My mind can feel like an ADHD whirlwind sometimes! One of the main reasons I hesitated to pursue publishing in the past was my struggle to focus and consolidate my thoughts. Thankfully, my son introduced me to a game-changing writing strategy: free writing. Essentially, I sit in front of the keyboard and let my thoughts flow freely, allowing whatever comes to mind to be recorded without judgment or constraint. Surprisingly, this method has enabled me to gather my scattered ideas and mold them into cohesive stories. Currently, I’m juggling five different projects. While working on one, inspiration for the others often strikes, leading to a dynamic and ever-evolving creative process.
Any message for our readers
Be prepared for a wild ride. In a desire for the reader to feel with Donovan Harris, our hero, I have assembled this book to have surprises and twists. The flow of the story captures the inner struggles that the detective is encountering as the investigation grows.
Thank you so much, Trey, for giving us your precious time! We wish you all the best for your journey ahead!
