In the stark reality of addiction, darkness often overshadows hope. Nathan Olszewski, writing under the pen name N.O., dives deep into this abyss in his profound poetry collection, Heroin Before Breakfast: My Recollection of a Life Almost Wasted Through brutally honest and evocative verses, N.O. reveals the harrowing journey of addiction, capturing the pain, emptiness, and eventual glimmers of redemption.
Exploring the Depths of Despair
N.O.’s poetry collection offers an unfiltered view of the harrowing life of addiction. Each poem in the collection serves as a vivid snapshot of the relentless struggle against substance abuse. In the poem “Lost,” N.O. poignantly writes, “you can’t run away from pain without selling your joy.” This line encapsulates the cruel paradox of addiction, where attempts to escape suffering only lead to deeper entanglement in misery.

The poems do not shy away from depicting the grim realities and emotional devastation that substance abuse brings. This raw portrayal is intended to shed light on the severity of the crisis and evoke a sense of empathy and understanding from the readers.
Rays of Hope Amidst the Darkness
Despite the pervasive darkness, N.O.’s poetry offers hope. In “Loving To My Death,” he writes, “Tears are the only way to detox, even with those that are toxic.” This line emphasizes the importance of confronting and releasing emotional pain as a crucial step toward healing. It serves as a reminder that the path to recovery often involves facing and processing the very pain that addiction seeks to numb.
N.O.’s balanced approach, juxtaposing despair with hope, makes his work especially poignant. While the poems lay bare the harsh realities of addiction, they also suggest that recovery is attainable. This dual perspective provides a powerful message of resilience and potential for those grappling with similar struggles.

We had the privilege of interviewing the Author. Here are excerpts from the interview:
Hi, Please introduce yourself and tell us about what you do.
My name is Nathan Olszewski, and I am an author. My books are published under the name N.O.
Please tell us about your Books
I’ve been writing for as long as I can remember, but I didn’t publish much until 2021. my first two collections were “Repercussions of Love” and “Cuando Ella Viene (When She Comes).” both were trials and tribulations of love.
My third is a little more dark. “Heroin Before Breakfast” deals with the subject of addiction. Selling my books was always about making enough money to publish the next, but with this one, I feel it’s a message that needs to be heard, and I also plan to donate a portion of each sale to help those with substance abuse problems. I also dedicated this collection to a close friend who passed away. One of many people I’ve known to lose their struggle.
Thank you so much, Nathan, for giving us your precious time! We wish you all the best for your journey ahead!
