Confronting Shadows
Imagine stepping into your dream job, expecting fulfillment and purpose, only to uncover a terrifying truth lurking beneath the surface. That’s precisely what happens to Leander “Leo” Stanton in K. Peterson’s enthralling sci-fi thriller, S.C.E.L.. With relentless suspense, sharp plot twists, and disturbing ethical questions, Peterson crafts a gripping narrative that holds readers captive from the first page to the last.
Into the Lion’s Den
Leo Stanton, a promising young doctor born into a powerful medical dynasty, eagerly begins his residency at the illustrious Stanton General Hospital. Driven by ambition and the hope of reconnecting with his emotionally distant father, Leo enters his new role expecting professional achievement and personal growth. Stanton General, celebrated for revolutionary treatments—including a supposed miracle cure known as “the elixir”—seems the perfect place for Leo to establish himself.
However, it doesn’t take long for Leo to realize things aren’t as pristine as they appear. Beneath the hospital’s shining facade hides an ominous reality: patients are being exploited, children are mysteriously vanishing, and unsettling operations occur in secret. As Leo digs deeper, his discoveries point toward S.C.E.L., a clandestine program tied deeply to his family’s legacy—revealing chilling practices that blur morality and scientific progress.
Morality in the Spotlight
Peterson doesn’t just craft a compelling thriller; she provokes critical thought about the ethical limits of medical science. With each layer Leo uncovers, readers are faced with unsettling questions about how far one should go in the name of advancement. The narrative forces Leo—and the audience—to confront uncomfortable truths about human nature, sacrifice, and responsibility.
Leo’s internal battles are profoundly authentic, making him relatable and compelling. Rather than an unflappable hero, he embodies uncertainty, vulnerability, and conflict—traits that make his moral dilemmas strikingly real. His growth through the narrative highlights the complexity of familial loyalty, professional ethics, and personal identity.
Uncovering the Sinister Truth
The strength of Peterson’s writing lies in her meticulous pacing and atmospheric tension. Stanton General isn’t merely a setting; it becomes a character in itself—a place teeming with hidden rooms, secret conversations, and dangerous revelations. Each twist and revelation builds seamlessly, maintaining suspense while deepening the reader’s emotional investment.
Peterson’s skillful blend of realistic scientific possibility and imaginative fiction enhances the novel’s disturbing plausibility. Her vivid depiction of laboratory experiments and the ruthless pursuit of medical breakthroughs heightens the narrative’s intensity, creating an unnerving reading experience that lingers long after the final page.

Hi, it’s great to have you with us today! Please share about your book with our readers.
Hello, my book is a sci-fi thriller about a young doctor named Leander—Leo—who starts his residency at his family’s elite hospital, thinking he’s finally stepping into the legacy he’s always wanted to be part of. But the deeper he gets into the system, the more he realizes things aren’t what they seem. The hospital has a perfect image, but underneath that, there are secrets—and not just shady business deals or internal politics. Serious, disturbing stuff that’s been hidden from the public for decades. And it’s all tied to his family.
Leo starts pulling at threads, and what unravels changes everything—not just about his career, but about who he is and how he came to be. There are twists, betrayals, and some really messed-up science. And yeah, it gets dark. If you like slow-burn unraveling, conspiracy, and characters who are forced to question everything they believe in, this book’s probably for you.
Please tell us about your journey.
What I want to say is that this journey took me a very, very long time—but the years I spent writing it were nothing compared to the number of times I rewrote this story. Before I ever settled on this final draft and manuscript, I almost quit entirely. There were so many nights I cried to my friends, telling them how I thought this story was trash. But deep down, I still had so much faith in it.
And finally, one day, Leander’s story just… clicked. It formed in my mind clearly, and I finally had a real direction. The original idea for this book was actually meant to be part of a series—I had the heart of it already mapped out in my mind. But to set everything in motion, I realized I had to start with Leo. He’s the foundation. And let me tell you… he’s been a pain in my butt.
But now, I’ve grown to love him. I know him. He feels like a friend to me, and I hope that somewhere in this book, you find a character you connect with too.
All I really wanted to do was create a piece of art. Something that people—especially those who don’t usually read—might pick up and actually enjoy. Before I ever fell in love with reading, all it took was one book to hook me. That one book opened the door for so many others. And maybe… maybe this could be that book for someone else. If it is, then I’ve done my job.
Any message for our readers?
The best message I can offer anyone reading this right now is: don’t give up. Even when it feels like you should. I’ve never had any formal writing training—unless you count my measly two years of dicking around in community college (with no degree obtained). The only actual writing course I ever took was Writing 122.
Everything else? I learned by reading. So many books.
I designed the book cover. I edited the manuscript—so yes, you’ll probably spot a few errors here and there. But that’s okay. The point is: sometimes you have to do the thing for yourself. Maybe someday I’ll have the funds to polish it up and smooth out all the creases. But right now, this story means everything to me.
And despite its flaws, it’s perfect to me, just like Leander. And hopefully… like Leander will be to you.
Thank you so much for giving us your precious time! We wish you all the best for your journey ahead!
