‘Skylar Is Promoted to Big Sister’ by Adesola Adejuwon Helps Children Prepare for a New Baby With Confidence

Becoming an older sibling can feel exciting, confusing, and wonderfully important all at once. Skylar Is Promoted to Big Sister: From Me to We: A New Role, a Bigger Heart gently helps children understand those emotions through a relatable family celebration.

A Special Promotion Around the Thanksgiving Table

Written by Adesola Adejuwon and illustrated by Misha Malik, the story follows Skylar, a spirited young girl who is deeply loved by her family. She is an only child and the youngest among sixteen grandchildren, which means affection and attention have always surrounded her. Skylar enjoys her familiar position within the family, although she also dreams of having a sibling. When she makes that wish on her birthday, she has little idea how much her life may soon change.

The surprising answer to her wish arrives during Thanksgiving, when relatives have gathered to celebrate gratitude and togetherness. Skylar’s family shares the joyful news that a baby is on the way. Along with the announcement comes a special new title for her: big sister. The idea feels like an exciting promotion, one that invites her to imagine companionship, shared adventures, and a meaningful role in the baby’s life.

That happiness soon becomes more complicated as Skylar begins thinking about what a growing family could mean for her. She begins to wonder what the baby’s arrival will mean for her and for the place she holds in her family. Skylar’s reactions give readers an understanding companion for that emotional transition.

Helping Young Readers Prepare for Change

The book’s central journey moves Skylar from an individual outlook toward a stronger sense of family partnership. “From Me to We” represents her growing awareness that love can be shared and strengthened across new relationships. Becoming a big sister asks her to make emotional room for someone else while discovering new qualities within herself. Her new role gradually becomes part of her developing identity.

This message may be especially valuable for children who are accustomed to receiving undivided attention. A sibling’s arrival can make ordinary experiences feel unfamiliar, and young children may lack the language needed to discuss their worries. Through Skylar, they can recognize that uncertainty is a reasonable response to change. The story encourages them to explore their feelings while trusting that their place within the family remains secure and meaningful.

Malik’s illustrations contribute to the book’s welcoming quality by giving children visual access to Skylar’s world. Young readers can observe expressions, family interactions, and important moments as the announcement unfolds. These images may help preschool and early elementary audiences connect words with emotions. They also create natural opportunities for adults to pause, ask questions, and invite children to describe what they notice on each page.

The story can support parents and caregivers who want to prepare a child for a new sibling with sensitivity. Shared reading may lead to useful conversations about the changes a new baby brings and the attention a newborn requires. Adults can ask children what excites them and what causes concern.

Educators and librarians may also find value in the book’s focus on emotional understanding and family relationships. The narrative can introduce classroom discussions about change, empathy, gratitude, and different family experiences. Grandparents can use it to reassure a child that each relationship keeps its own importance as a family expands. Its real-life inspiration adds sincerity, making Skylar’s emotional discoveries feel recognizable across many households.

We had the pleasure of connecting with children’s book author Adesola Adejuwon, who shared insights into her writing journey, creative inspiration, and the story behind her book, Skylar Is Promoted to Big Sister. Here is what she had to say.

Please introduce yourself and tell us what you do.

My name is Adesola Adejuwon. I’m a pharmacist, children’s book author, wife, mother, and creative entrepreneur passionate about storytelling, personal growth, and making a meaningful impact. Although my professional background is rooted in healthcare and science, I’ve always embraced creativity and the power of storytelling to inspire and connect people. I’m the author of Skylar Is Promoted to Big Sister, a heartwarming children’s picture book celebrating family bonds, emotional growth, and the journey of welcoming a new sibling. I’m also the founder of SolazIndelibles, a creative platform dedicated to meaningful stories, ideas, and experiences that leave lasting impressions.

Please tell us about your journey.

My journey into children’s literature began with a meaningful family experience: preparing my daughter for the arrival of a new sibling. While welcoming a baby is exciting, it’s also a significant transition for the child becoming an older sibling. I wanted to create a story that captures the joy of that milestone while acknowledging the emotions and adjustments that come with it. That inspiration became Skylar Is Promoted to Big Sister: From Me to We: A New Role, A Bigger Heart. What began as a personal story evolved into a two-year publishing journey filled with learning, revisions, creative decisions, and unexpected challenges. Balancing my professional career, family responsibilities, and the publishing process required patience, resilience, and determination. Seeing the finished book come to life was incredibly rewarding. Even more fulfilling is knowing that a personal experience can now help families start meaningful conversations about sibling relationships, kindness, and emotional growth. And this is only the beginning of my storytelling journey!

What are the strategies that helped you become successful in your journey?

My journey has taught me that success is often built through persistence, adaptability, and a willingness to keep learning. I stayed focused on creating a quality book, even when the process required more time and effort than anticipated. I learned to ask questions, seek professional guidance, embrace constructive feedback, and make thoughtful decisions rather than rushing the process. Balancing multiple responsibilities also taught me the importance of discipline, prioritization, and celebrating small milestones. Above all, faith, perseverance, and the encouragement of loved ones helped me stay grounded throughout the journey. For me, success isn’t simply about reaching a milestone. It’s about growing through the experience and creating something that can positively impact others.

Any message for our readers.

Every meaningful journey begins with the courage to take that first step. Whether you’re pursuing a creative dream, exploring a new opportunity, or navigating a season of change, believe in your ability to grow beyond what feels familiar. Be patient with yourself, remain curious, and celebrate progress along the way. To parents and caregivers, I’d also encourage us to remember that children experience big emotions, even when they don’t always have the words to express them. A little patience, reassurance, and intentional connection can make a lasting difference. Through Skylar Is Promoted to Big Sister, I hope to remind families that change can bring challenges, but it can also open the door to deeper understanding, stronger bonds, and beautiful new beginnings. Keep learning, keep growing, and never underestimate the impact of your story.

Thank you so much, Adesola, for giving us your precious time! We wish you all the best for your journey ahead!
