The Kind Bunny at the Center of the Story
Barnaby, the main character, is a small white bunny with soft fluffy fur, pink inner ears, round dark eyes, and a cheerful smile. His calm and thoughtful personality makes him instantly relatable. Barnaby enjoys helping others and spending time with those around him, which makes his world feel lively and welcoming.

Throughout the story, Barnaby encounters a group of blue birds known as Burds. These birds flutter nearby as he goes about his day. While they appear friendly and harmless, they carry an important meaning in the story.
Each Burd represents a burden Barnaby collects when he agrees to something that feels like too much for him. Instead of appearing by chance, the birds become connected to Barnaby through his own choices. Every time he says yes to something that stretches his energy or comfort, another Burd joins the flock around him.
At the beginning, the number of Burds seems small. Barnaby hardly notices them as he continues helping others and moving through his daily adventures. The birds simply accompany him, adding color and movement to the scenes.
Laura introduces this concept in a way that young readers can easily understand. The birds provide a simple visual image for something that many people experience emotionally.
When the Burds Begin to Multiply
As Barnaby continues saying yes to requests and responsibilities, more Burds appear. The flock grows steadily larger. The bunny still tries to carry on with his day, but the presence of so many birds slowly begins to weigh on him.
The Burds remain connected to Barnaby wherever he goes. With each new one he collects, the load becomes heavier. What once seemed easy now requires more effort.
Eventually the number of Burds becomes overwhelming. Barnaby struggles to move forward. Surrounded by the many burdens he gathered, he collapses beneath them and begins to cry.
This moment is one of the most powerful parts of the story. It shows what happens when someone tries to carry too much without taking time to care for themselves. Children may recognize the feeling of being overwhelmed, while adults often see a deeper reflection of everyday life.
Laura presents this scene with empathy and understanding. The imagery of Barnaby buried under the Burds helps readers grasp the emotional impact of taking on more than one person can comfortably manage.
A Wise Conversation With Sage the Tortoise
Barnaby’s difficult moment leads to an encounter with Sage the Tortoise. Sage is calm, thoughtful, and patient. Instead of offering quick solutions, the tortoise listens carefully and shares gentle guidance.
During their conversation, Barnaby begins to understand why he collected so many Burds. He had wanted to help everyone around him, and saying yes felt like the right thing to do. Yet that constant giving left him without enough energy for himself.
Sage explains that setting boundaries can be an act of kindness. Learning to say no allows a person to protect their energy and maintain balance in life. When someone takes care of their own well-being, they remain capable of offering genuine care to others.
Barnaby starts to see that self-love does not reduce compassion. In fact, it strengthens it. With this new understanding, the heavy feeling around him begins to ease.
Laura K. McLeod delivers this message with warmth and encouragement. The story avoids blame and instead focuses on learning and growth.
The Inspiration Behind Laura McLeod’s Story
The themes within Barnaby and the Burds come from Laura’s personal experiences and professional work. Laura works as a kindergarten teacher, where she spends her days supporting young learners and nurturing their development. She also guides individuals as a transformational mentor, helping them explore self-awareness and personal growth.

Writing children’s books had been Laura’s dream since she was young. Her path toward becoming an author included many life experiences that shaped her perspective. After co-authoring a book with fellow healers that became a number one international bestseller, she gained the confidence to create her first children’s story.
Barnaby’s journey reflects Laura’s own understanding of boundaries. Growing up as the oldest of three siblings, she often focused on caring for others while neglecting her own needs. It took time and inner reflection for her to recognize how important self-love truly is.
Today Laura shares these insights through her work and through her platform Sparkling Essence. Her mission centers on helping people reconnect with the light and strength already within them.

We had the privilege of interviewing the author. Here are excerpts from the interview:
Thank you so much for joining us today! Please introduce yourself and tell us what you do.
My name is Laura McLeod, and I wear a few different hats. By day, I’m a kindergarten teacher, which I love. I’m also a transformational mentor — I guide people on their journey to self-discovery, helping them recognize things within themselves they may not have seen before. And now, I’m a children’s book author, which has honestly been a lifelong dream.
Please tell us about your journey.
My journey has been anything but a straight line. I’ve experienced a lot in life, but one dream has followed me since I was a small child — I always wanted to write children’s books. Last year, I co-authored a book with other healers that became a number one international bestseller, and that gave me the courage to bring my first children’s book to life. The story of Barnaby is deeply personal. Growing up as the oldest of three, I never really had boundaries of my own and didn’t even understand what they were until much later in life. I know so many people can relate, so I created a parable that children can enjoy for its charm but that adults connect with on a deeper level too.
What are the strategies that helped you become successful in your journey?
I’m still very much on my journey, but what’s made the biggest difference has been committing to truly loving myself. When you do that inner work, you realize how important boundaries are — not only for your mental well-being but for your spiritual well-being too. You have to make time for yourself instead of constantly pouring all your energy into everyone else. That shift is the heart of what I write about and teach.
Any message for our readers
I hope that Barnaby, in all his cuteness, helps spark a realization that self-love isn’t selfish — it’s essential. Even when life is busy, you need to find time for yourself and to recharge. Setting boundaries is one of the most loving things you can do for yourself and for the people around you.
Thank you so much, Laura, for giving us your precious time! We wish you all the best for your journey ahead!
