Humanity’s main defence against the Fallen comes from Atma users. These gifted individuals can summon powerful beings from within their own souls. Known as Atma Avatars, the summoned entities vary greatly in form and ability, often resembling figures associated with folklore and ancient spiritual traditions.
Evidence of this power existed throughout history in stories about shamans and wise spiritual figures who could call forth mysterious beings. The ability disappeared for generations before suddenly returning during the modern era. Its reappearance became undeniable when an ordinary driver facing a collision summoned a black-winged humanoid entity surrounded by blue spiritual fire. The avatar stopped the vehicles and prevented the accident.
More Atma users soon appeared. Governments responded in different ways, with some attempting to control their powers and others recruiting them into the military. Once the Fallen arrived, these users became essential because their avatars were among the few forces capable of killing the monsters.
Daniel Drake Chooses a Dangerous Escape
Daniel Drake is a teenage Atma user living in a Colony built in what was once Colorado. He’s kind and thoughtful, although he has difficulty recognising his own value. His relationship with his childhood friend Pamela once made him feel loved and accepted.
Pamela had confessed her feelings after years of friendship. Daniel struggled to understand why she would choose him, believing that he lacked bravery, intelligence, strength, and physical appeal. Her affection gradually convinced him that he could be important to someone. Their relationship became a source of genuine happiness in his uncertain life.
Everything changes when Daniel discovers that Pamela has betrayed him. The revelation breaks the trust he had placed in her and deepens the insecurities he already carried. Overwhelmed by anger and hurt, he decides to leave his home and join the army.
The story begins during his departure. Daniel rides through the night on the back of a huge obsidian fox while Pamela follows and attempts to stop him. She arrives alongside an elven mage-like avatar, placing herself directly in his path. Their conversation quickly becomes tense as Daniel refuses to explain his decision.
The confrontation offers an immediate look at the emotional bond between an Atma user and their summoned being. Daniel’s fox responds to his distress, growling as his anger rises. Pamela’s avatar moves protectively in front of her, ready to use magic. Feelings that might have remained private suddenly carry the possibility of a supernatural battle.
Daniel’s own Atma Avatar is a white humanoid fox dressed in samurai garments and armour. Resembling a kitsune, it provides him with the power needed to confront the Fallen. Military service will test that power repeatedly while exposing him to new dangers, responsibilities, and relationships. After revelation of the betrayal, his avatar emerged with obsidian-black fur, sharper, more intimidating features, and a noticeably wilder presence. The dramatic change reflects the emotional weight Daniel carries, revealing how deeply the experience reshaped him.
His decision may have begun as an escape, though his experiences in the army create opportunities for healing. The people he meets could show him that friendship and loyalty still exist, even after betrayal has made trust feel impossible.
