Alexander L. George’s ‘Once Upon a Mall’ Is a Tender Celebration of Friendship, First Love, and Growing Up

Certain novels leave an impression because of grand adventures. Others succeed because they remind readers of experiences that feel deeply familiar. Once Upon a Mall by Alexander L. George belongs to the second category, offering a heartfelt look at adolescence during a time when life moved at a different pace.

Set in late-1980s Pennsylvania, the novel follows a young boy learning to navigate change, friendship, and the uncertainties of growing up. Through vivid details and relatable experiences, the story recreates an era filled with neighborhood exploration, school events, and afternoons spent in places that felt like the center of the world.

Billy’s Search for Belonging

The story begins when twelve-year-old Billy Szentgyorgy moves to Sinking Spring, a suburb near Reading, Pennsylvania. The transition is far from easy. A new town brings unfamiliar faces, unfamiliar routines, and the unsettling feeling of standing outside a world where everyone else already seems connected.

Billy’s struggle to adjust forms the emotional core of the novel. Readers follow him as he slowly builds a life in his new surroundings. Friendships emerge gradually. Trust develops through shared experiences. What once felt uncomfortable begins to feel like home.

Alexander captures this process with remarkable authenticity. There are no rushed transformations or unrealistic breakthroughs. Instead, Billy’s confidence grows through small interactions and everyday encounters. That gradual progression makes his journey believable and engaging.

Many readers will recognize elements of their own childhood within Billy’s story. Moving to a new place, trying to fit in, and discovering where one belongs are experiences that remain universal regardless of time or generation.

The Place Where Memories Take Shape

Although the novel explores many aspects of growing up, the Berkshire Mall stands at the center of Billy’s world. More than a location, it becomes a symbol of freedom, discovery, and personal growth.

The mall offers a space where young people can spend time together without constant supervision. It provides opportunities for adventure, conversation, and connection. Within its bright corridors and bustling atmosphere, Billy experiences moments that help define his teenage years.

Friendships strengthen during long afternoons spent wandering through stores. First crushes appear unexpectedly. New levels of independence emerge with every visit. The mall becomes a backdrop for experiences that may seem ordinary in the moment yet become extraordinary in memory.

One of the novel’s greatest achievements is the way it captures the cultural significance of malls during that era. Before smartphones and social media transformed daily life, these spaces served as gathering points for entire communities. Alexander recreates that environment with warmth and precision, allowing readers to step back into a period when shared physical spaces played a central role in social life.

Capturing the Magic of Ordinary Days

A defining quality of Once Upon a Mall is its ability to find meaning in simple experiences. The novel does not rely on dramatic events to maintain interest. Instead, it focuses on the moments that quietly shape a person’s identity.

Snowfall changes familiar streets into places of wonder. Bicycle rides through suburban neighborhoods create a sense of adventure. School dances bring excitement, nervousness, and anticipation. Conversations with friends reveal insights that only become meaningful years later.

These scenes create an atmosphere rich with nostalgia and emotional honesty. Alexander understands that childhood memories often revolve around small details rather than major events. A particular winter afternoon, a familiar route home, or a gathering with friends can remain vivid long after larger moments have faded.

The late-1980s setting adds another layer of charm. It represents a period on the verge of significant cultural and technological change. Childhood still unfolds through face-to-face interaction, local exploration, and shared experiences. That setting allows the novel to preserve a way of life that many readers remember fondly.

We had the privilege of interviewing Alexander L. George. Here are excerpts from the interview:

Hi, Thank you so much for joining us today! Please introduce yourself and tell us what you do.

My name is Alex George. I am a businessman and CEO of a Florida-based strategic consulting firm specializing in public relations, aviation, negotiations, and problem-solving. My career has included campaign management, sales, communications, aviation, and advisory work across several industries. Outside of business, I have a deep interest in history, storytelling, and nostalgia—often the kind that makes you say “they don’t make things like they used to,” whether that’s true or not. Once Upon a Mall is my first novel, and I’m excited to share it.

Please share your journey with our readers.

My journey has taken me through public service, political campaigns, corporate leadership, historical research, and community involvement. I have also held leadership roles with charitable and historical organizations, experiences that strengthened my appreciation for people and the stories that connect us. Once Upon a Mall grew from memories I felt worth preserving. I grew up when the mall was more than a place to shop—it was a social hub and the center of teenage life (and a place where you went “just to walk around” and somehow stayed all afternoon). Friendships formed there, first crushes happened there, and entire Saturdays disappeared there. That shared experience defined an era of American life. This book is a tribute to that time.

What are the strategies that helped you become successful in your journey?

Three things have guided me: discipline, persistence, and a sense of humor. Discipline keeps you moving when motivation fades. Persistence helps you push through setbacks because there will always be setbacks. And humor helps you keep perspective when things don’t go as planned—or when they do, which can be more suspicious. Success is rarely a breakthrough; it’s consistency over time.

I hope readers enjoy it as much as I enjoyed writing it. The eBook is available now, and paperback and hardcover editions will be released in August.
