A Gentle Escape into Celyn Falls
Some stories create excitement with dramatic twists, while others quietly settle into the heart through emotion, atmosphere, and unforgettable characters. Stories for Rainy Days: A Celyn Falls Bookshop Romance by Simon Hughes belongs firmly in the second category. This warm contemporary romance invites readers into a small Welsh town where rain falls often, memories linger in old buildings, and unexpected new beginnings appear when life feels uncertain.
The novel follows Clara Wren, who travels to Celyn Falls after inheriting her late great-aunt Eleanor’s bookshop. Clara arrives with sensible intentions and a clear plan. She wants to organise the business, review the property, sell the shop, and return to her normal routine without becoming emotionally attached to the town or its people.
That plan begins to unravel almost immediately.
Wren Books is far from organised. The roof leaks during heavy rain, paperwork sits in untidy piles, and the shop itself seems determined to resist change. There is also Pickle, the famously judgmental cat who behaves less like a pet and more like a permanent manager observing Clara’s every decision.
More Than a Romance Novel
Although romance sits at the heart of the story, the novel offers much more than a traditional love story. Simon Hughes explores grief, belonging, emotional healing, and the quiet courage required to begin again after disappointment or loss.
Clara’s emotional journey feels authentic because it unfolds gradually. As she spends more time inside the bookshop and around the people of Celyn Falls, she starts reconnecting with parts of herself she had buried beneath practical decisions and carefully controlled routines.
One of the strongest aspects of the novel is its sense of community. The townspeople are warm, curious, supportive, and occasionally interfering in ways that feel both humorous and comforting. Eleanor clearly left a lasting impact on the community, and the affection people still hold for her gives the story emotional depth.
The children’s reading club also adds charm and warmth throughout the book. Those scenes capture the magic of storytelling and remind readers why bookshops can become deeply meaningful places for people of all ages.
Tom Ellis, the carpenter next door, becomes another important presence in Clara’s life. Tom is thoughtful, dependable, and quietly kind. His relationship with Clara develops naturally through shared conversations and everyday moments rather than dramatic declarations. That slow-burn connection perfectly suits the gentle mood of the novel.
Readers who enjoy closed-door romance and emotionally grounded relationships will likely appreciate how sincere and believable the romance feels. Simon Hughes focuses on emotional intimacy, trust, and personal growth instead of relying on unnecessary drama.
The Atmosphere That Makes the Story Shine
Celyn Falls itself becomes one of the novel’s most memorable elements. The fictional Welsh town feels wonderfully vivid, filled with narrow streets, riverside walks, cosy cafés, rainy evenings, and old buildings carrying years of history and memory.
Simon Hughes writes with genuine affection for Wales, and that connection gives the setting remarkable authenticity. Rain appears constantly throughout the story, though it never feels gloomy. Instead, it adds softness and reflection to the narrative, creating the comforting atmosphere that defines the novel from beginning to end.
The pacing remains calm and thoughtful, allowing readers to fully settle into the world of the story. Small moments receive attention and care, whether it is arranging a rainy-day book display, sharing coffee during a quiet afternoon, or discussing stories that shaped childhood memories.
That emotional warmth makes Stories for Rainy Days especially appealing for readers who enjoy cosy fiction, bookshop settings, and character-driven storytelling with emotional honesty.
As the first novel in the Celyn Falls Romance series, the book also leaves readers eager to spend more time in this beautifully imagined town.

We had the privilege of interviewing Simon Hughes. Here are excerpts from the author interview:
Hi, thank you so much for joining us today! Please introduce yourself and tell us what you do.
My name is Simon Hughes. I am a writer from North Wales, and I write warm, emotional, character-led fiction with a strong sense of place. My stories often explore love, memory, belonging, second chances, and the quiet turning points that shape people’s lives. I am especially drawn to atmospheric settings, old buildings, bookshops, cafés, small communities, and the emotional pull of returning home. My novel, Stories for Rainy Days, is a contemporary romance set in the fictional Welsh town of Celyn Falls. It is a warm, reflective, and emotional story about love, loss, healing, and finding hope after difficult times.
Please share your story with our readers.
I have loved writing for as long as I can remember. Stories have always been a way for me to understand people, places, emotions, and the moments that stay with us long after they happen. Over the years, I have written in different forms and explored many creative projects, but fiction has always remained at the heart of what I want to do.
Stories for Rainy Days started from a seed when I was studying for my Creative Writing MA. It stemmed from my love of atmospheric, emotional storytelling. I wanted to write a novel that felt comforting but meaningful — the kind of book readers could curl up with on a rainy day, but also one that carried real emotional depth. The setting of Celyn Falls is fictional but inspired by the Welsh town where I was born, grew up, left for 25 years, and then returned to during Covid. I love places with rivers, old streets, independent shops, community spirit, and a sense that every building has a story.
The journey of writing this book has been about creating a world readers can step into, but also about telling a story that feels honest. It is about people carrying the past, learning to heal, and finding the courage to open themselves up to love and hope again.
What are the strategies that helped you become successful in your journey?
The biggest strategy has been consistency. Writing a novel takes time, patience, and discipline. I have learned that you cannot wait for perfect inspiration; you have to keep showing up, keep writing, and keep improving the work even when it feels difficult.
Another important strategy has been writing from the heart while still thinking about the reader. I want my books to feel emotionally honest, but I also want them to give readers a satisfying experience. That means focusing on character, atmosphere, pacing, setting, and the emotional journey.
I believe in building strong fictional worlds. For Stories for Rainy Days, the town of Celyn Falls is not just a backdrop. It is part of the story. Creating a strong sense of place helps readers feel as though they are living inside the novel, not just reading it.
Finally, I have learned to keep going. Every creative journey has doubts, setbacks, and moments when you question yourself. The important thing is to continue, keep learning, and believe that the story you are writing matters.
Any message for our readers?
My message to readers is simple: I hope Stories for Rainy Days gives you warmth, comfort, and hope.
This is a novel for anyone who enjoys emotional romance, second chances, atmospheric settings, and stories about love, healing, and belonging. It is a book for readers who understand that life is not always perfect, that people carry pain quietly, and that sometimes the smallest moments can change everything.
I hope readers fall in love with Celyn Falls, with its rain-soaked streets, cosy corners, old memories, and sense of community. Most of all, I hope the story reminds readers that even after loss, heartbreak, or regret, there is still room for hope, connection, and new beginnings.
Thank you so much, Simon, for giving us your precious time! We wish you all the best for your journey ahead!
