Army Veteran Nik Nanoski’s DUMB 31 Is A Brilliant Post Apocalyptic Tale Where Humanity Endures Against All Odds

Great science fiction often leaves readers thinking long after the story ends. While imaginative settings and futuristic concepts capture attention, memorable characters are usually what make a novel stand apart. That balance is exactly what Nik Nanoski strives to achieve in DUMB 31, a gripping tale that combines survival, mystery, and emotional depth within a carefully constructed post-apocalyptic world.

Created over the course of ten years, the novel reflects years of persistence, creativity, and thoughtful storytelling. It is a story about rebuilding lives, facing uncertainty, and discovering that hope can survive even after civilization has fallen.

A Future Built on Survival and Unanswered Questions

The foundation of DUMB 31 begins hundreds of years after humanity’s collapse. Deep beneath the surface, an underground facility has preserved human life for generations. Designed as a sanctuary during global catastrophe, the bunker successfully protects its population for more than three centuries while the world above remains unknown.

Life inside the facility follows strict protocols until critical systems begin to fail. Power fluctuations, unstable oxygen supplies, structural damage, and growing security concerns create an increasingly dangerous environment. Emergency evacuation procedures become unavoidable, forcing the remaining residents to prepare for a future no one has ever experienced.

The novel’s operations manual immediately establishes a believable atmosphere. Technical reports, archived records, and facility status updates make the setting feel authentic while creating suspense about what may exist beyond the sealed bunker. Every new revelation encourages readers to keep turning pages as the mystery unfolds.

Once the characters leave the safety of the underground shelter, the narrative expands into something far larger than a survival mission. It becomes an exploration of identity, responsibility, and rebuilding society from the ground up.

People Who Make the Story Matter

Although DUMB 31 features an engaging science fiction premise, its greatest strength lies in its characters. Nik places people at the center of every challenge, allowing readers to experience their fears, hopes, victories, and personal growth throughout the journey.

The survivors must make difficult choices while adapting to circumstances unlike anything their ancestors prepared them for. Every decision influences not only individual lives but also the future of an entire community. Leadership emerges through actions rather than titles, while compassion becomes just as valuable as intelligence or strength.

Those themes carry particular authenticity because of Nik’s own experiences. As an Army veteran and healthcare professional with nearly two decades in the medical field, he understands the importance of teamwork, resilience, and caring for others during difficult moments. Those values naturally shape the emotional foundation of the novel.

Readers looking for meaningful relationships alongside imaginative world-building will appreciate how every major event serves both the larger story and the personal journeys of its characters.

Ten Years of Passion Behind Every Page

Few novels arrive without years of effort, and DUMB 31 is an excellent example of creative perseverance. The idea remained in Nik’s imagination for a long time before he finally committed to transforming it into a completed manuscript.

From that point forward, the project demanded extraordinary dedication. Thousands of hours were invested in developing the world, strengthening the characters, refining the plot, and rewriting scenes until every piece worked together. Throughout that process, Nik balanced professional responsibilities, education, and daily life while continuing to return to the manuscript.

The experience strengthened his patience and reinforced his belief that stories can positively influence readers. Rather than viewing writing simply as entertainment, Nik sees storytelling as an opportunity to encourage empathy, hope, and meaningful reflection.

His personal interests in music, cooking, and creative writing also contribute to the richness of his imagination, helping shape a world that feels carefully planned without losing its emotional warmth.

We had the privilege of interviewing the author. Here are excerpts from the interview:

Thank you so much for joining us today! Please introduce yourself and tell us what you do.

My name is Nik Nanoski, and I’m the author of DUMB 31, a character-driven science fiction novel about a group of survivors emerging from an underground bunker more than 300 years after humanity’s collapse. Outside of writing, I’ve spent nearly twenty years working as a nurse, and that experience has given me a deep appreciation for resilience, compassion, and the strength people find in one another during difficult times. Those themes naturally found their way into my writing.

Please tell us about your journey.

I’ve always loved stories, but DUMB 31 lived in my imagination for years before I finally committed to writing it. What started as an interesting premise slowly became something much bigger—a story about hope, community, leadership, and what it truly means to remain human.

Writing this novel taught me patience more than anything else. It went through countless revisions and more rewrites than I can remember. Along the way, I was balancing a career, school, and everyday life. There were plenty of moments where quitting would have been easier, but I kept coming back to the page because I genuinely believe stories are the way that I can help make the world a little bit better.

What are the strategies that helped you become successful in your journey?

The biggest strategy was consistency. Inspiration is wonderful, but discipline finishes books.

I also learned to welcome feedback rather than fear it. Every edit made the story stronger, and every revision helped me become a better writer.

Most importantly, I focused on writing characters before spectacle. I have lived in this world for a decade now. I made the world, and when I started to write this, I let the characters act as they naturally would in this space. Readers may come for the science fiction, but they’ll stay if they care about the people living through it.

Finally, I try to live by a simple philosophy that appears throughout my work: Full Heart. Full Mind. Full Belly. To me, that means caring for yourself, never stopping your curiosity, and making sure everyone’s needs are met. It represents the keys to a good life.
