Profound Instrumental Album ‘This Is Water’ Showcases Light and Shade’s Creative Chemistry and Musical Maturity

A guitar phrase can suggest a memory; a saxophone line can linger like a thought left unfinished. On This Is Water, Memphis instrumental group Light and Shade use melody and rhythm to trace the emotional currents of ordinary life.

The album arrived on March 17, 2025. Across its compositions, the trio considers grief, love and the strength it takes to keep going, inviting listeners to bring their own experiences to the music.

A Partnership That Became a Band

Light and Shade grew from relationships built over many years. Guitarist Jeff Williams and drummer Harvey Waldman began writing and playing live music together when they were 14. In 2012, Williams met saxophonist Josh Aguilar. Their songwriting collaboration gradually developed into the group.

That shared history shapes how the trio works together. Guitar, saxophone and drums each have room to carry a melody, establish a pulse or shift the mood. Without lyrics directing the listener toward one interpretation, the instrumental arrangements leave space for personal reflection.

The musicians bring a wide listening background to their writing. Their influences include progressive and hard rock, instrumental guitar, jazz and fusion, with artists such as Pink Floyd, Stone Temple Pilots, Joe Satriani and Steve Vai among the names connected to the band’s inspirations. These reference points provide context for the group’s sound, while its compositions remain rooted in its own creative partnership.

Williams’ earlier experience includes performing with Sacrum. He and Waldman continued developing music together, and Williams’ work with Aguilar helped bring Light and Shade into focus. The trio released its self-titled debut in 2023, laying the groundwork for the more personal themes explored on its second album.

Personal Stories in Instrumental Form

The title This Is Water reflects the album’s attention to the conditions people move through every day. Light and Shade describe the record as a soundtrack to life’s trials and tribulations, with room for celebration as well. Grief, trauma and tragedy inform its emotional landscape, while the performances carry a sense of endurance.

Some songs draw directly from the lives of the musicians. “Queen Marie” pays tribute to Williams’ late grandmother. The final track, “The Other Robin Williams,” remembers his father, who died of cancer at a young age. These dedications give the album a personal center, connecting its broader themes to family and loss.

The group highlights “Storm in the Desert,” “Twiddle,” “Reggie B” and the title track as standout compositions. Each contributes to the record’s varied character. Some moments invite close attention to the interplay between instruments; others create a wider atmosphere that listeners can settle into.

The album’s instrumental form also gives each person room to hear something different. A passage shaped by sorrow may bring one listener back to a particular loss, while another may find reassurance in its steady movement. The songs make space for those individual responses.

Six Days in the Studio

Light and Shade recorded This Is Water at Young Avenue Studio in Memphis in just six days. The band produced the album, with Ethan Hunt handling engineering and mixing. The sessions captured the trio working together in a city with a deep musical heritage.

Recording at a concentrated pace brought the musicians’ established chemistry into the studio. Their long history of playing together gave them a strong foundation as they shaped the material. The result carries both careful arrangement and the immediacy of performance.

The band is now recording its third album, This Is Fire, planned as a follow-up to This Is Water. The new title marks the next stage in the group’s work as Williams, Waldman and Aguilar continue writing and recording together.
