Kat MacKenzie’s EP ‘Cocoon’: A Masterpiece of Vulnerability and Strength

If you’ve ever stumbled upon a song that feels like it was written just for you, then you might understand the magic of Kat MacKenzie’s music. Originally from the South and now a long-time resident of Upstate New York, Kat has a knack for crafting songs that touch the soul. Her songwriting is rich with lyrical depth and emotional resonance, drawing from her own life experiences and observations. Each note and lyric invites listeners into her world, encouraging them to reflect on their own feelings and memories.

A Journey Through Darkness and Light

Kat’s path to becoming a musician wasn’t a straight line. A significant turning point in her life was her introduction to gothic clubs. Unlike the clichés often associated with such places, Kat didn’t fall into destructive habits. Instead, these vibrant and eclectic spaces became her sanctuary. They offered her a place to express her individuality and explore her connection to music, dance, and art. Surrounded by a community that celebrated imperfection and the complexities of the human experience, she found happiness in the romance and depth of the music.

She often speaks of creativity as being like invisible ravens flying overhead, dropping ideas to those who are open to them. While ravens are often seen as ominous creatures, for Kat, they symbolize the arrival of inspiration. This unique perspective reflects her ability to find beauty and meaning in places others might overlook.

The Birth of the “Cocoon” EP

Kat’s latest project, the Cocoon” EP, is a transformative piece of music that holds a special place in her heart. The EP features four tracks: “Cocoon,” “MSG,” “Gotta Have a Little Faith,” and “Hair on Fire.” These songs delve into themes of post-pandemic isolation, personal growth, friendship and relationship struggles, health challenges, and the journey of reintegrating into community life.

The title “Cocoon” is deeply symbolic. It represents a period of isolation and introspection that Kat experienced during the pandemic. Much like a caterpillar undergoes metamorphosis within a cocoon, she used this time to reflect and grow creatively. Writing these songs helped her process complex emotions and emerge stronger, both personally and artistically. She even began performing at local open mics, sharing her music and connecting with others in new ways.

Collaborating with Frank Palangi of Palangi Studios, Kat brought her vision to life. The production adds multiple layers and dynamic elements that enhance the music without overshadowing her authentic songwriting. Their friendship and working relationship added an extra spark to the creative process, making the EP even more special.

Influences and Aspirations

Kat’s music is influenced by a diverse array of artists, including Florence and the Machine, Radiohead, The National, Kate Bush, The Cure, Chelsea Wolfe, Cocteau Twins, Billie Eilish, Chappell Roane, Taylor Swift, and Bon Iver. These influences can be felt in the alternative rock sound of her music, which is both catchy and timeless.

She finds strength in embracing the rawness of life, acknowledging that sometimes things are sad, intense, and profound. Her goal is to move her listeners, to inspire them, and maybe even make them dance and dream. Kat hopes to embody female strength, integrity, softness, and imagination, both as a person and as a songwriter.
