Modern rock music often feels overcrowded with trends, polished formulas, and predictable emotions. Monocene approaches things differently. The German-Croatian trio creates music that feels deeply personal, emotionally exposed, and completely unfiltered. Their songs are built around heavy guitars, atmospheric soundscapes, and lyrics shaped by real experiences rather than manufactured drama.
For the members of Monocene, music has never been just entertainment. It became a way to process pain, survive difficult periods, and reconnect with themselves when life felt overwhelming.
Three Different Paths That Led To One Band
Monocene officially formed in 2023, bringing together Joerg Grote, Igor Zimic, and Stjepan Vukušić. Although the band itself is still relatively new, the experiences behind the group stretch across years of personal struggle and musical exploration.
Each member arrived with a completely different background. One spent years playing cover music across Croatia, learning how to connect with crowds in every kind of setting imaginable. Another developed his drumming style in underground rehearsal rooms around Zagreb, pushing through difficult conditions simply for the chance to play. The third explored multiple genres, moving between jazz, swing, metal, and rock while searching for the right creative direction.

At the time they met, all three musicians were dealing with major personal difficulties. None of them knew each other beforehand. They were simply individuals searching for something meaningful that could help them cope with life. Music became that shared language almost immediately.
One moment in particular still stands out to the band. When Stjepan first entered the room and noticed Igor, he immediately began speaking Croatian to him after realizing they came from the same region. The coincidence felt almost unbelievable considering they had never crossed paths before.
That instant connection created a strong sense of trust within the band. From the beginning, Monocene agreed they would allow every influence and creative instinct into the songwriting process. Instead of limiting themselves to one strict style, they focused on emotional honesty and natural chemistry.
More Than I Own Pushes Beyond Surface-Level Emotion
After releasing their debut EP Superior in 2024, Monocene continued developing their sound with their first full-length studio album, More Than I Own. Released on January 24, 2026, the album was recorded over nearly a year with producer Mike Jordan and reflects the band’s most personal work so far.

The record contains 13 tracks and moves through emotional themes with remarkable clarity. Songs such as Friction, My Safe Place, Connected At Heart, and Awake capture feelings of exhaustion, loneliness, anxiety, and emotional survival without sounding forced or overly dramatic.
What gives the album its emotional weight is the fact that the themes come directly from lived experiences. The lyrics confront racism, exclusion, alienation, displacement, and depression from a deeply personal perspective. These topics are not treated as distant observations. They are realities the members themselves have experienced.
The title More Than I Own reflects the album’s central idea. The band repeatedly asks what truly remains once material possessions, status, and external validation disappear. Instead of providing easy answers, the songs encourage reflection and emotional honesty.
Musically, the album balances intensity with restraint. Massive guitar sections stand beside quieter, stripped-back passages that allow the lyrics and atmosphere to carry equal importance. That contrast creates tension throughout the record without relying on excessive production techniques.
The response from listeners and critics has been strong. Vaultlab.it described Monocene as a band whose voice stands out through “depth, honesty, and tangible emotional urgency.” That emotional urgency is exactly what makes the album memorable.
Sound Built On Atmosphere And Vulnerability
Monocene exists somewhere between alternative rock, post-grunge, and indie rock, though their music rarely fits comfortably into a single category. Their songs combine wide guitar textures with deliberate space and restraint, creating an atmosphere that feels both intimate and intense.
The band avoids unnecessary complexity. Every instrument serves the emotional core of the song. Quiet moments feel just as powerful as the heavier sections because the focus always remains on emotional connection rather than technical showmanship.
Their wide range of musical influences also gives the band flexibility. Elements of metal, classic rock, indie music, and jazz-inspired phrasing appear naturally throughout their work. Despite that variety, Monocene maintains a clear artistic identity built around sincerity and emotional realism.
About The Band
Monocene is a German-Croatian alternative rock trio featuring Joerg Grote, Igor Zimic, and Stjepan Vukušić. Formed in 2023, the band creates emotionally driven music shaped by alternative rock, post-grunge, and indie influences.

Their debut EP Superior arrived in 2024, followed by their independently released studio album More Than I Own in 2026. Through atmospheric songwriting and emotionally honest lyrics, Monocene continues building a sound rooted in vulnerability, personal truth, and human connection.
The Lasting Impact Of Honest Music
Monocene’s music resonates because it speaks openly about experiences many people struggle to express themselves. Their songs do not chase trends or artificial perfection. Instead, they focus on emotional truth, personal reflection, and the complicated realities of modern life.
That honesty gives the band a powerful sense of identity. In a music scene filled with noise and distraction, Monocene creates songs that feel real, human, and impossible to ignore.
We had the privilege of interviewing the Music Artists. Here are excerpts from the interview:
Thank you so much for joining us today! Please introduce yourselves and tell us what you do.
We are MONOCENE, an alternative rock band from Germany. Our music combines heavy guitars, atmospheric soundscapes, and emotional songwriting. We create music that reflects personal struggles, inner conflicts, isolation, and the pressures of modern life. We want every song to feel honest and intense, both emotionally and sonically.
Please tell us about your band’s development.
The three of us have all been through a lot, both musically and personally. The fact that we found each other is either an incredible coincidence or fate, depending on how you look at it. The three of us didn’t know each other at the time; we were all in very, very difficult personal situations and were each looking for something to help us cope – and that just happens to be music. For us, it was ‘love at first sight’. The fact that Igor and Stjepan both come from the same part of Croatia was an even more incredible coincidence. They didn’t know each other at all beforehand. Stjepan walked in, looked at Igor, and spoke to him straight away in Croatian. Unbelievable.
Musically, we promised each other we’d try out everything we enjoy. You can hear that on the album too. Nevertheless, we always have something distinctive, our signature sound, so to speak. We’re very proud of that.
Our songs mainly revolve around the things we’ve experienced: alienation, exclusion, racism, and depression. But above all, the album revolves around the central question: what do I really possess when I strip away all the material things? What remains?
So for us, music is always therapy too 😉
What strategies have helped you on your path to success?
One key strategy was staying true to ourselves rather than trying to meet expectations. We focused on making music that truly represents who we are.
Consistency also played a major role. Even when progress seemed slow, we kept writing, recording, refining, and releasing music. Building a project from scratch requires patience.
Another key factor was learning a wide range of skills beyond music, including production, visuals, branding, video production, and digital promotion. In today’s music industry, artists often have to build a whole world around their music.
We’ve been at this for a few years now; we’re no longer in our 20s, but in our late 30s and early 40s. Life experience helps us not to take things so seriously and to enjoy them more.
You know better how to deal with certain things and don’t dwell on nonsense or negative things and feelings.
Any message to our readers?
Stay true to yourselves and create things that really mean something to you. The most powerful art often arises from vulnerability and real experiences. And to everyone who’s struggling inside: you’re not alone, even if it feels that way.
A big thank you to everyone who listens, supports independent music, and identifies with what other artists and I do. We’ve met so many bands and played, spoken, and partied with so many great people. Support local artists, buy their stuff, and go to live events. And above all: make art yourselves, create things, and have the courage to show them to everyone.
Thank you so much for giving us your precious time! We wish you all the best for your journey ahead!
