A Tranquil Holiday Tale
The holiday season conjures images of cozy fireplaces, twinkling lights, and families gathering to share laughter. Within this cheerful bustle, certain stories capture the essence of Christmas in a gentle, uplifting way. The Unexpected Journey of Little Pine: A Potentially True Christmas Tree Story by Ann L. Thompson is one such treasure. Set against snow-blanketed forests and adorned living rooms, this book follows the small but determined Little Pine, who longs to bring solace and wonder to those celebrating. While other evergreen trees vie to become seasonal showpieces, Little Pine’s journey reminds us that real warmth comes not from grandeur, but from genuine kindness and a willingness to help.
Little Pine’s Quiet Wish
In a forest brimming with stately firs and tall spruce trees, Little Pine feels overshadowed. He watches as families bundle up in scarves and mittens, traipsing through the snow in search of that “perfect” tree for the holidays. Although he’s neither the tallest nor the fullest pine, he harbors a dream: to bring cozy joy into someone’s home. What sets Little Pine apart is the gentle hope beating in his branches. He senses that his purpose extends beyond mere decoration. Perhaps his role is to offer a warm glow of compassion and encourage readers—both children and adults—to see that all of us, no matter our size, can bring comfort in unexpected ways.
The Author’s Path
Ann L. Thompson, who penned this charming tale, spent more than four decades crafting clear and heartfelt messages in corporate and nonprofit communications. With degrees in communication from the University of Missouri–Kansas City (M.A.) and the College of St. Catherine in Minnesota (B.A.), Thompson honed her ability to speak directly to the human spirit. Outside her professional sphere, she volunteered with registered therapy Sheltie dogs, visiting senior centers, hospitals, and even busy airports to spread positivity. She also explored her musical side as a singer-songwriter and served as a registered ULCA minister, reflecting a lifelong dedication to uplifting others. In retirement, she revisited her writing projects, polishing The Unexpected Journey of Little Pine until it shone as brightly as a star atop a Christmas tree.
Enchantment for All Ages

Reflecting on a Simple Message
Many holiday tales focus on large gestures or miraculous events, but Ann L. Thompson takes a subtler approach. Little Pine’s power lies not in grandiose feats but in tender, everyday kindnesses—sheltering a shivering bird, uplifting a lonely traveler, or simply standing tall when no one seems to notice. In a society that often values spectacle, his gentle gestures are a welcome reminder that sincere warmth can outshine the flashiest displays. Children who feel overlooked might see themselves in Little Pine’s desire to be seen and valued. Adults can recall times when a small, thoughtful word or action proved transformative. The book’s quiet lessons encourage all readers to find significance in the ordinary.
When Timing Finds Its Moment
The story behind The Unexpected Journey of Little Pine is itself reminiscent of holiday serendipity. Thompson once wondered if publishing close to Christmas might be too late in the season. Then she remembered how Charles Dickens’s A Christmas Carol came out on December 19, 1843, yet still resonates centuries later. Seeing that the magic of a heartwarming holiday story knows no calendar limits, Thompson followed her intuition. Her decision underscores Little Pine’s own message: timing can be less important than the sincerity behind our actions. Whether discovered on December 1 or December 24, the tale remains an invitation to pause and appreciate small wonders in a fast-paced world.
Embracing the Season’s True Gift
Above all, Little Pine’s story is a gentle urging to embrace compassion—something that resonates beyond the Christmas season. While the scent of pine and the twinkle of ornaments may set a festive stage, the real glow comes from lifting someone’s spirits, offering a kind word, or being present in a moment of need. As readers follow Little Pine’s steps through frosty clearings, they might sense the quiet power of these acts rippling into everyday life. If you’re seeking a wholesome addition to your holiday traditions—or simply want a reminder that small actions can have a lasting impact—The Unexpected Journey of Little Pine offers a calming, encouraging voice. We had the privilege of interviewing the author. Here are excerpts from the interview:
Thank you so much for joining us today! Please tell us about your journey.
I wrote my first draft many years ago. Every Christmas, I’d dig it out and think, “I really should get this out!” Time was always an issue. I retired last year and finally had the gift of time to work on it. I was concerned that it was too late in the Christmas season to release it, but then I learned that “A Christmas Carol” was published on December 19, 1842. So, with a nod to Charles Dickens, I figured this was the year. It’s a quick read, and I’ve heard from more than a few adult readers that it’s ideal for adults.
Any message for our readers
Please give it a try and maybe even give it as a gift to friends and family. Thanks!
Thank you so much, Ann, for giving us your precious time! We wish you all the best for your journey ahead!
