In an era where the rapid pace of life often leaves little room for reflection, Something in the Basement: Fun and Frights in the Basement Below by Malika Oakley, guides young readers (and their guardians) through the murky waters of fear, assumptions, and the power of truth. Oakley’s narrative, inspired by her own experiences and those of her son, not only captivates with its suspense but also imparts a timeless lesson: the fears that haunt us are often shadows of our own creation.
A Tale of Courage and Curiosity
The story revolves around young Cecilia, who moves into a new home only to find herself ensnared by the ominous allure of the basement. What lurks within its shadows? Is it a monster, a ghost, or something far worse? The fear of the unknown beckons, and with each passing night, the basement’s call grows stronger. Yet, as Cecilia embarks on a journey to confront her fears, readers are invited to explore alongside her, discovering that the real adventure lies not in avoiding fear but in facing it head-on.
Oakley crafts a world where the line between imagination and reality blurs, reminding us that the monsters we conjure in our minds often bear no resemblance to the truth. Through Cecilia’s eyes, we learn that bravery isn’t the absence of fear but the willingness to confront it. This story is more than just a thrilling adventure; it’s a lesson in understanding that our assumptions about the unknown can hold us back from truly living.

From Personal Fear to Universal Empowerment
Behind every great story lies a seed of truth, a personal experience that breathes life into characters and settings. For Oakley, Something in the Basement is more than just a work of fiction; it’s a reflection of her own journey and that of her son. The fears that once held them back become the foundation for a narrative that seeks to empower and inspire.
Oakley’s personal connection to the story adds a layer of authenticity that resonates with readers. It’s a reminder that we all have our ‘basements,’ our fears that lurk in the shadows, waiting to be confronted. Through Cecilia’s tale, Oakley not only shares a part of her world but also invites us to examine our own, encouraging a shift from fear to empowerment.
Something in the Basement is not just a story about facing the unknown; it’s a journey of transformation. From the depths of fear to the heights of courage, Oakley guides readers through the dark, proving that sometimes, the only thing to fear is fear itself. Whether you’re a young reader seeking adventure or an adult looking to rediscover the courage of youth, this book is a reminder that bravery comes in all sizes, and the first step is always the same: facing the unknown with an open heart and a curious mind.
In a world teeming with uncertainties, Something in the Basement reminds us that the only monsters that exist are the ones we create in our minds. Malika Oakley, through her eloquent storytelling and deep personal insight, crafts not just a tale of frights and fun but a journey towards understanding, bravery, and the endless power of imagination.
We had the pleasure of interviewing the author. Here are excerpts from the interview:
Please tell us about your book ‘Something in the Basement: Fun and Frights in the Basement Below’.
My book is about a little girl who moved into her new house, but she thinks that there is something scary living in it with her.
Please tell us about your journey.
When I was eight years old, I moved into a new house, and I was scared of being alone in it. I thought every sound in the house was a ghost waiting to get me when I was alone. When my son was Seven, we moved into a new house, and he was scared as well. I created this story, and I would tell him this story every night. When I decided to write this book, my son asked me not to use his name and instead use his little sister’s name because she is a baby and he is not.
What are the strategies that helped you become successful in your journey?
I have a million stories that I would love to write. When I turned 39, I decided it was time for to sit down and start writing them down. The best thing I told myself was just to write. For years, I struggled to finish my first draft of anything. I enrolled in many writing courses only to be discouraged by the need to structure everything. This caused me to give up or become bored with the process. So, I decided that I would write and worry about structure later. In doing that, I have been able to complete a second picture book and draft of my first Young Adult novel. I did most of my writing during the pandemic lockdown.
Any message for our readers
The message of the book is really about making assumptions. How many times have we made judgments about people, places, or things because we heard something? How many times have you assumed that something was far worse than it really was, or have you realized that a negative assumption you had turned out to be untrue? When things scare us, we should confront them. Most of the time, it turns out to be nothing at all.
Thank you so much, Malika, for giving us your precious time! We wish you all the best for your journey ahead!
