Discover ‘CARE’ by Author Declan James Mullan: Explore the Fragile Line Between Man and Machine

CARE: A Vision of the Future—Shadows and Light

Declan James Mullan’s debut novel, CARE, crafts a vivid portrait of a future where the quest for harmony has overshadowed essential human freedoms. Set in the rebranded United Isles of Britannus and Hibernus, this tale unfolds against the backdrop of a meticulously controlled society rebuilt from the ruins of a devastating global pandemic. Underneath the shiny facade of technological progress, readers discover unsettling truths lurking in the shadows.

Scott Hunter: The Power of Curiosity

At the heart of CARE is Scott Hunter—a compelling figure whose life is marked by intriguing contrasts. Despite his privileged upbringing within the elite circles of the Unison Trust, Scott grapples daily with the realities of cerebral palsy. His android assistant, DEC-E, aids him in navigating this intricate world, but it’s Scott’s unrelenting curiosity and inner resilience that genuinely propel the narrative forward.

Scott’s experiences illuminate the fragile balance between societal dependence on technology and human authenticity. With every revelation, readers accompany Scott on his increasingly intense journey, questioning whether genuine peace can ever be imposed through authoritarian governance or if something inherently human inevitably resists containment.

Artificial Intelligence and Moral Complexity

In exploring Scott’s story, CARE raises profound ethical dilemmas about artificial intelligence and its integration into everyday life. Mullan skillfully examines how technology, when unchecked, might challenge core ideas of freedom, autonomy, and identity. The blurred lines between artificial intelligence and human sentience provoke thoughtful reflection—can true emotion and authentic connection coexist with pervasive artificial constructs?

Through these profound questions, Mullan doesn’t merely speculate about technology’s capabilities. Instead, he challenges readers to think deeply about humanity’s evolving relationship with innovation and the unintended ethical consequences accompanying progress. The novel invites reflection on how easily personal freedoms can erode beneath promises of security and unity.

A Story Infused with Personal Experience

Mullan’s narrative authenticity stems directly from his personal history and professional experiences. Having grown up amid the tensions of Northern Ireland’s divided communities, Mullan expertly portrays societal fracture and the underlying dynamics of conflict and reconciliation. This background provides a nuanced understanding of how unity, when forced, might fracture rather than heal.

Moreover, Mullan’s experiences as a care provider inform the emotional depth and empathy found throughout the novel. These experiences allow readers to feel a profound connection with Scott and other characters, bridging speculative fiction with grounded, human realities. Mullan’s diverse roles as a multimedia designer, educator, and EAL specialist further enrich his storytelling, providing vivid imagery and a deep understanding of cultural dynamics.

Life Beyond the Novel

Declan James Mullan’s real-life journey complements the novel’s themes. Currently based in Thailand, Mullan’s experiences as an educator have deepened his appreciation for cultural diversity, shaping his inclusive writing style. His dedication to animals, particularly reflected in his adoption of three street dogs—Chubs, Rocky, and Anna—demonstrates a personal commitment to compassion and care that mirrors the emotional core of CARE.

Family, too, profoundly influences Mullan’s perspective. Cherished moments spent with his daughter Clodagh and wife Fon provide emotional grounding, adding warmth and authenticity to his storytelling. These personal elements subtly inform his narrative style, blending speculative fiction with rich human emotions.

Readers can access CARE through Amazon in Kindle, hardcover, and paperback formats, ensuring the novel’s powerful message reaches a wide audience.

A Compelling Reflection

Ultimately, CARE delivers an insightful reflection on humanity’s vulnerabilities, resilience, and the relentless quest for authenticity amid technological advancement. Declan James Mullan masterfully crafts a story that is equal parts cautionary and inspiring, challenging readers to ponder deeply the delicate balance between progress and ethical responsibility.

With compelling characters, thought-provoking themes, and a deeply human heart, CARE offers readers an unforgettable exploration of the complexities defining our collective future. Mullan’s narrative isn’t just speculative fiction—it’s a mirror reflecting profound truths about human nature, resilience, and the enduring power of care itself.

We had the privilege of interviewing Declan James Mullan. Here are excerpts from the interview.

Hi, It’s great to have you with us today! Please share about yourself with our readers.

Hi, I am a primary teacher living in Thailand specializing in EAL English. I have also worked as a freelance designer for many years, mostly in 3D, graphics, illustration, animation, and video.

Please tell us about your book.

My debut novel, CARE, unexpectedly grew from a simple idea: to explore my formative experiences growing up amidst Northern Ireland’s deep political divisions and my early career as a care provider. During these impactful times, observing conflict and vulnerability firsthand profoundly shaped the story. Somewhere along the way, that short story morphed into a sprawling dystopian sci-fi novel. I found myself building a futuristic world, reimagining Northern Ireland as ‘Ulsteria’ to explore themes of society, humanity, and our future. It’s been quite a journey, and I hope CARE sparks interesting conversations for you, the reader.

Please share your journey with our readers.

I was born in London, England, but grew up in Northern Ireland in the 90s, which was the tail end of the conflict. I saw what real political and religious division can do to a country living in a divided city with segregated communities. It was during university that I first worked as a care assistant at a nursing home. After completing my master’s degree, I moved to London to work in the design industry, which didn’t work out as I had hoped, so I moved back home and got a job working as a dementia care assistant. From here, I moved on to work in community care and then student support at a university. This led me to education, and I find myself today working as a teacher in Thailand.

What are the strategies that helped you become successful in your journey?

The most important thing is never to be afraid to fail. I was once terrified of failure; then, I failed over and over again. Each time, I learned valuable lessons. Now, if I want to do something, I just go for it.
