Discover the Joy of Learning with Gillian Joseph’s ‘Tyree and the Not-So-Green Monkeys’

An Island Adventure for Little Learners

Children’s books have a special way of opening doors to imagination, and Tyree and the Not-So-Green Monkeys by Gillian Joseph does this beautifully. This playful story takes kids into a tropical setting filled with color, animals, and discovery. The main character, Tyree, has one mission in mind: to find the green monkeys said to live at The Tropical Resort. His journey, however, turns into much more than a search. It becomes an adventure that blends curiosity, learning, and the joy of exploration.

Young readers are invited to follow Tyree as he counts animals, notices plants, and explores hidden corners of the resort. With each page, they share in his determination and delight, making the book an engaging read for children ages two to five.

The playful adventure shines thanks to the extraordinary illustrations by Prabir Sakar, whose art breathes life into every page.

A Story That Sparks Curiosity

What makes this book stand out is the way it encourages curiosity in small but meaningful ways. Tyree hears about the green monkeys and sets off with determination to find them. Along the way, he doesn’t just search. He observes. He counts creatures on the beach. He studies colors in the garden. He notices the differences in his surroundings.

This style of storytelling gives children more than entertainment. It introduces them to early concepts like numbers and colors while showing them how to look closely at the world around them. The adventure isn’t rushed. Instead, it gives children room to pause, point, and participate. Each page becomes an interactive moment where young readers can ask questions, make guesses, and share what they see.

For parents and educators, this combination of play and learning makes the book especially valuable. Reading aloud turns into an activity that builds both knowledge and imagination.

Bright Illustrations and Engaging Details

Every great children’s book pairs its words with visuals that grab attention. In Tyree and the Not-So-Green Monkeys, the illustrations capture the vibrancy of a tropical resort. Lush greenery, sandy beaches, and colorful animals fill each page with details that children will want to revisit again and again.

The pictures also support the story’s interactive style. A child might count the animals in a scene or point out different shades of green in the plants. The artwork encourages participation without requiring instructions. It simply invites children to explore.

Because of this, the book works well with a wide range of ages. Toddlers may focus on the bright images and repetition. Preschoolers may take the lead in counting or describing what they notice. The illustrations are layered in a way that allows the book to grow with the child.

Why Families Will Treasure It

Children often return to books that make them laugh, surprise them, or invite them to play along. This book checks all those boxes. Tyree’s search for the monkeys is fun, his discoveries are surprising, and the “not-so-green” monkeys at the end bring a playful twist that children love.

Families will enjoy reading this story again and again. It works as a cozy bedtime read, sparking gentle curiosity before sleep. It also works as an energetic story time book that keeps children engaged with counting and colors. Parents will appreciate how the book combines learning with fun, and children will simply love joining Tyree on his adventure.

Educators and librarians will find equal value. The story can be used in lessons about numbers, colors, or animals. It can also encourage discussions about observation, discovery, and the joy of exploring new places. The versatility ensures the book will be used often rather than read once and forgotten.

We had the privilege of interviewing Gillian Joseph. Here are excerpts from the interview.

Hi Gillian, it’s great to have you with us today! Please share about yourself with our readers.

Hello, I’m a mom, a mom-in-chief. That’s the title I’m most proud of—and the only one I need. My journey to writing Tyree and the Not-So-Green Monkeys began in Barbados. I went looking for the island’s famous green monkeys—first at a tropical resort, then finally I found them at the Wildlife Reserve. That real-life adventure inspired me to turn the experience into a children’s picture book—an interactive story about counting, nature, and discovering how amazing our planet really is.

What are the strategies that helped you become successful in your journey?

I believe stories are powerful. My strategy for success? Telling a true story that children can connect with.

Any message for our readers?

This book is for readers who love nature, who love to count, and who want to help take care of the world around them. Whether at bedtime, in libraries, or in classrooms, Tyree and the Not-So-Green Monkeys is a journey to share with children everywhere.

Thank you so much, Gillian, for giving us your precious time! We wish you all the best for your journey ahead!
