“Syllabus of the Heart: A Teacher’s Journey Through Love, Loss, and the Strength to Begin Again” by Dr Harsin Paul brings readers into a world shaped by human vulnerability. The novel steps into the life of Professor Raj, a man who spends years guiding young minds while carrying quiet aches in the background. Many imagine professors as individuals with steady routines and measured lives. Raj’s story opens the curtain and shows the emotions teachers rarely speak about. His journey reflects how deeply personal experiences influence the strength they carry into the classroom.
During his MBA days, Raj falls in love with Preeti. Their connection feels genuine and full of hope. It grows with shared dreams and a sense of understanding that feels rare. Circumstances pull them apart, and Raj must walk forward with a heart that learns the weight of letting go. He continues with his life, marries Anamika, and raises Amit with compassion. He becomes a respected academic, admired for his values and the way he shapes his students. Even with a full life, a small part of his heart still carries the memory of that first love.
The story uses these early years as the emotional foundation for a powerful twist that arrives later.
When Fate Circles Back With Unexpected Truths
Amit grows into a dedicated doctor who builds his own path with hard work and long nights in medical school. His journey brings him close to Dr. Saloni. Their friendship grows into love during years of shared stress, complicated cases, and moments when they learn to lean on each other. Amit believes they’re ready to take the next step and start a life together. Their bond feels strong and honest.
Everything changes when Saloni’s father enters the picture. He’s an influential industrialist gearing up for an MP campaign. His vision for his daughter’s marriage follows a strict idea of status and social standing. He insists that Saloni marry someone from Singapore who fits his preferred image. The refusal leaves both Amit and Saloni heartbroken.
A deeper shock follows. Saloni’s mother is Preeti, the same woman Raj loved during his youth. The discovery hits with force. It brings back every emotion Raj worked hard to settle. It also places him in a situation that mirrors his past, almost like destiny giving him a chapter he never finished.
Instead of withdrawing into old pain, Raj decides to stand strong for Amit. His approach is steady and sincere. He uses quiet strength to ensure Amit and Saloni have a chance at the future he once wished for. Watching him take this stand becomes one of the most moving parts of the novel, as it shows how love can evolve into courage.

Lessons of the Heart That Go Beyond Romance
“Syllabus of the Heart” paints a rich emotional landscape. It speaks about teachers as individuals who experience heartbreak, overwhelming responsibilities, and personal battles while continuing to show up with calm expressions. Raj’s life reflects countless educators who guide others with patience even when their own lives carry unanswered questions.
The novel also shares stories of couples who learn that love grows through effort. Their relationships experience strain from work pressure, family expectations, and the longing to feel seen. They navigate misunderstandings, long silences, and moments that almost pull them apart. Each story reveals how connection deepens when people choose to stay present through difficult conversations and small breakthroughs.
Dr Harsin uses these moments to remind readers that healing is not about perfection and it’s about choosing to keep learning. The heart teaches through mistakes, resilience, and soft moments of understanding. Readers who have loved deeply, lost something meaningful, or wished for another chance will find comfort in the pages. The book offers the reassurance that beginnings can appear even after painful chapters.

We had the privilege of interviewing the author. Here are excerpts from the interview:
Thank you so much for joining us today! Please introduce yourself and tell us what you do.
I am Dr Harsin Paul (my pen name), a professor at a leading Indian university. For over 25 years, I’ve been shaping management graduates, and I’ve lived a life that quietly balances academic responsibilities with emotional realities the world rarely sees. My work continues to revolve around teaching, writing, shaping young minds, and understanding the silent pressures students carry every day.
Though academia has been my profession, storytelling has become my voice. My debut novel, Syllabus of the Heart, was born from years of witnessing the unseen struggles, sacrifices, and unspoken emotions that define a professor’s life—truths that often go unnoticed, untouched, and unexplored in fiction.
By choosing to stay behind the story, I hope the spotlight remains where it truly belongs: on the narrative, on the emotions, and on the quiet human experiences that shaped this book.
Please tell us about your journey.
My journey has been shaped by a disciplined middle-class upbringing, strong values, and the desire to make a meaningful difference. Over the years, I witnessed students battling heartbreak, ambition, family pressure, and societal expectations. Parallelly, I saw professors silently carrying emotional wounds—failed relationships, sacrifices, loneliness, and unfulfilled dreams—while still showing up every day to motivate others. These unspoken truths stayed with me. Professor Raj, the protagonist of my book, is born from a blend of my experiences and countless real stories I witnessed in classrooms and hostel corridors. Writing this novel became more than a creative pursuit; it became a healing experience, a way to shed light on the tender, fragile side of an academician’s life.

What are the strategies that helped you become successful in your journey?
Consistency over intensity. Listening more than speaking. Learning from every setback. Staying grounded in compassion. And converting pain into purpose. I’ve always believed that success is not in titles or achievements but in the lives we touch and the hearts we understand. These principles shaped both my academic journey and my writing.
