My name is Dr. Douglas McLane. I’m a retired United States Air Force veteran and a decorated educator with over 30 years of experience in military and academic leadership. I’ve served as a Professional Military Educator, mentoring thousands of cadets and students through the values of discipline, resilience, and service.
Today, I’m an author of character-driven fiction that draws deeply from real-world experience. My latest novel, Tear in the Night, is a Cold War psychological thriller that combines military realism with emotional and psychological intensity. Through my writing, I aim to give readers a compelling mix of suspense, history, and the human cost of duty.
Please tell us about your story/journey.
My journey has always centered around service—first to my country, then to education, and now to storytelling.
I spent decades guiding young minds as both a military leader and an educator. Along the way, I saw firsthand how deeply service members and their families carry the weight of sacrifice, and how powerful their stories can be. After earning my Ph.D. in Education, I found that writing allowed me to honor those stories and explore the emotional terrain behind uniforms and missions.
Tear in the Night was born from that experience. It’s a thriller, yes—but at its core, it’s about leadership, trust, and what happens when darkness takes hold from within. I wanted to write a story that respected the military structure but also peeled back the layers of emotional and psychological pressure our service members often carry silently.
What are the strategies that helped you become successful in your journey?
There are three strategies I live by:
Authenticity – I write from experience, whether it’s leadership in high-stress situations or the quiet strength of resilience. Readers can feel the difference when a story is lived rather than just imagined.
Discipline – The military instilled in me a daily sense of structure and commitment. That discipline now fuels my writing schedule, revisions, and even my mentoring of other educators and authors.
Connection – I’ve always believed in lifting others as you climb. Whether mentoring educators or supporting my fellow veterans, I’ve learned that true success is shared, not solo.
