Life stuck behind a desk isn’t exactly the thrilling adventure most people dream about. If you’ve ever questioned the sanity of trading your precious days for emails, endless Zoom calls, and soulless meetings, Robert Stoehrer Jr.’s vibrant new novel, “Coloring Outside the Lines: Life’s Too Short to Die at Your Desk,” is the escape you’ve been waiting for. Brimming with humor, daring escapades, and heartfelt moments, this book invites readers on a journey toward rediscovering the joy of truly living.
Leaving It All Behind
Michelle and Alex, two lifelong friends, have climbed to impressive heights in their professional careers. Michelle rules the Wall Street trading floor with unflinching confidence, while Alex dazzles in the fast-paced world of marketing. Yet, despite their outward success, their lives feel hollow—overshadowed by relentless stress, mounting exhaustion, and an undeniable void. Everything changes dramatically when a series of extreme events, including skydiving mishaps and an EF5 tornado, shake them awake to the brutal truth: life’s too precious to waste.
Determined to rewrite their story, they boldly leave behind their power suits and corporate accolades, trading them for jeans, laughter, and a quirky dream in the quaint town of Joyous. Here, in a town that feels worlds away from their previous lives, they open a whimsical party store. But there’s just one unusual, firm rule in their playful new enterprise: absolutely no clowns. Michelle’s intense fear of these painted jesters adds both humor and complexity to their otherwise blissful new adventure.
Facing Fears, Finding Fame
Just when their charming business begins to flounder, an impulsive marketing stunt inadvertently catapults Michelle into her ultimate nightmare. Forced to don the makeup and colorful attire of a clown, Michelle becomes the reluctant yet widely adored “Merry Michelle.” Surprisingly, her transformation triggers a series of unpredictable, comical, and heartwarming adventures, propelling her into a whirlwind of viral fame, glittery chaos, and profound connections.
Amid the glitter bombs and unexpected spotlight, Michelle discovers something deeper—her greatest fear holds transformative power. Through a particularly memorable encounter involving CPR and the heartfelt gratitude of a little girl, Michelle learns a powerful truth: life’s richest moments often hide behind our deepest fears.
An Author’s Inspiring Backstory
Author Robert Stoehrer Jr.’s own remarkable journey gives “Coloring Outside the Lines” a poignant authenticity. For over two decades, Robert lived in the structured, problem-solving world of IT. But life had other plans. After undergoing a life-changing surgery that resulted in the loss of his right foot, Robert found himself in a vulnerable state, physically immobilized and emotionally uncertain about his future.
A sudden blackout during a fierce summer storm left him isolated and disconnected from the outside world. With only a flashlight, a pen, and a scratch pad to keep him company, Robert began crafting the humorous and heartfelt story that would eventually become his debut novel. His journey from personal adversity to joyful creativity infuses each page with genuine warmth, resilience, and an inspirational message about embracing life’s unpredictable nature.
Rediscovering the Joy of Life
“Coloring Outside the Lines” is more than an entertaining escape from daily routine—it’s an uplifting invitation to pursue joy actively and courageously. Michelle and Alex’s story vividly illustrates that real happiness is often found in unexpected twists, colorful chaos, and meaningful human connections. Stoehrer Jr. skillfully blends comedy and sincerity, underscoring the book’s central theme: life’s most fulfilling experiences rarely follow neat, predictable paths.
This humorous, suspenseful, and deeply relatable novel challenges readers to step boldly outside their comfort zones, face fears head-on, and embrace the wonderful messiness of life. It’s a refreshing reminder that joy isn’t passive—it’s a vibrant, often messy experience that demands full participation.

Hi Robert, It’s great to have you with us today! Please share about yourself with our readers.
Hi, I have worked in the IT industry for 25 years. I am a Field Technician who travels around to fix various computer issues. Writing and storytelling were never something I seriously pursued, despite many people telling me I was good at it. But, life has a funny way of presenting things in ways you can’t ignore.
Please tell us about your book.
Coloring Outside the Lines is a hilarious, suspenseful, heartfelt tale of burnout, friendship, and finding joy in the most unexpected places. Michelle and Alex are lifelong friends; they met in kindergarten. Wall Street shark Michelle and marketing queen Alex ditch their high-powered, soul-crushing careers after back-to-back near-death experiences. They start over in the sleepy town of Joyous, with a derelict storefront, and they open a quirky little party shop with one firm rule: no clowns. Why? Because Michelle has an intense, very real fear of them. But when their business begins to tank. One rogue employee suits up in a wig and face paint, and things take a wild turn, forcing Michelle into a bet that transforms her into Merry Michelle, a clown, for one week. What follows is a wild ride of glitter, viral fame, a CPR rescue, and a hug from a little girl that might change everything. Full of wit, warmth, and moments that hit you right in the heart, this is the ultimate feel-good beach read for anyone who’s ever dreamed of quitting the grind and choosing joy—face paint and red nose optional.

My writing journey never really started until mid-August of 2023, when doctors were forced to amputate my right foot. The procedure left me unable to walk or even stand without assistance. During my recovery, a powerful summer storm knocked out power, and I was left in the dark. There was no TV, no Internet, and I needed to use my phone sparingly. However, I needed something to keep my mind active. The only thing I could think of was to use my imagination to escape my situation mentally. With a flashlight, a pen, and a scratch pad, I started the outline for Coloring Outside the Lines: Life’s Too Short to Die at Your Desk. Once power was restored, I utilized AI to enhance the story, and contributions from online communities further refined the finished product.
What are the strategies that helped you become successful in your journey?
Never give up. In Coloring Outside the Lines, Michelle and Alex face mockery, taunting, and other negative people. People who want to tear them down. Ignore those who are unappreciative and focus on the people who support you.
Any message for our readers?
There are two big takeaways from this book. First, Merry Michelle said it best when she said, “Emerald Wealth gave me everything money could buy. But, it almost took everything it couldn’t.” Don’t let your job take your happiness, and if it tries, it’s time to update your resume. Second, surround yourself with people who won’t let you give up. Just after the amputation of my foot, I was convinced that I’d never stand or walk again. My first therapy assignment was to stand for 10 seconds, but I barely made 2 seconds on my first try. Today, I can stand, walk, and drive (using hand controls). The journey wasn’t easy, but in a literal sense, I took it one step at a time.
Thank you so much, Robert, for giving us your precious time! We wish you all the best for your journey ahead!
