A Journey Through Imperfections

With Friends and Imperfections is not just an album; it’s a philosophy. Sean Boynes believes that music is at its best when it’s raw, unpolished, and filled with the unpredictable energy of live performance. This album takes that belief to heart, with every song recorded live and without the overuse of technology or studio magic. The result is a collection of tracks that feel honest, real, and spontaneous.

With Friends Imperfections

For Boynes, who has worked with the likes of Lowlander and Firefly Fringe before stepping away from the scene, this album marks a significant shift. After a decade away from the industry, With Friends and Imperfections is his re-entry into the music world, but on his own terms. It reflects his desire to create music that doesn’t hide behind production gimmicks or polish. Instead, each song revels in its imperfections, capturing the raw energy of live music-making.

Boynes explains, “With Friends and Imperfections is about more than just creating tracks—it’s about embracing the beauty of the imperfections that come with true musicianship. When you’re performing live, anything can happen, and that’s where the magic lies.”

The Power of Collaboration

What makes With Friends and Imperfections particularly unique is the impressive array of musicians that Sean Boynes brought together for the project. Boynes didn’t just go into this alone; he called upon a diverse group of artists, from Grammy™ winners and indie rock veterans to a full orchestra and even world-class bagpipers. Each of these collaborators added their own flavor to the album, resulting in a rich and layered listening experience.

Boynes wanted to ensure that the album felt like a collaboration in the truest sense. He believes that music is a shared experience, and he wanted the album to reflect the energy and diversity that comes when musicians of different backgrounds come together. The album’s title, With Friends and Imperfections, is a nod to this collaborative spirit.

Each track brings something different to the table. Some songs are driven by powerful guitar riffs and pounding drums, while others weave in orchestral elements or the unique sound of bagpipes. This eclectic blend of instruments and styles makes the album feel fresh and exciting, with each song taking listeners on a new journey.

Rooted in the Ohio Valley

With Friends Imperfections

The location where the album was recorded plays a huge role in its identity. Boynes and his team chose to record With Friends and Imperfections live in the heart of the Ohio Valley. The decision to use this location was intentional, as the region’s rich cultural history and rugged, blue-collar roots are reflected in the album’s sound. The Ohio Valley has long been a region known for its connection to the working class, and Boynes wanted that raw, unfiltered spirit to come through in the music.

Recording live in such an environment helped the album maintain a grounded, organic feel. The region’s influence can be felt in every note, and the album captures the authenticity and grit of the Ohio Valley itself. For Boynes, the setting added to the album’s sense of imperfection, allowing the music to feel more real and less manufactured.

The Movement Behind the Music

With Friends and Imperfections isn’t just an album—it’s a call to return to the heart of live music. In today’s world, where much of the music is polished to perfection, Sean Boynes is offering something different: music that is raw, honest, and real. The imperfections aren’t hidden but celebrated, reminding listeners that music, like life, is messy, unpredictable, and beautiful in its authenticity.

This album is part of a broader movement to bring back the art of live performance. Boynes is leading a charge to return to the days when music was made on the spot, in the moment, with all the energy and unpredictability that comes with it. With Friends and Imperfections invites listeners to turn up the volume, embrace the imperfections, and lose themselves in the energy of real rock ‘n’ roll.

In a world where technology often smooths over the rough edges, With Friends and Imperfections is a breath of fresh air. It reminds us that sometimes, it’s the imperfections that make music—and life—truly extraordinary. So plug in, turn up the volume, and let Maverick Smith take you on a journey back to the raw, real heart of rock ‘n’ roll.

We had the privilege of interviewing Sean Boynes. Here are excerpts from the interview:

Hi, Please introduce yourself and tell us what you do.

Hi, I’m Sean Boynes. I’m a guitarist, vocalist, and producer, and I’ve been fortunate to work with some of the best in the business. After a decade-long hiatus, I’ve returned to the music scene with a project close to my heart—Maverick Smith.

Please tell us about your Latest Album.

With Friends & Imperfections is our latest album, and it’s really a revival of sorts. Recorded deep in the Ohio Valley, it brings together an eclectic mix of Grammy winners, indie rock icons, world-class bagpipers, and even an orchestra. Every note was captured live, celebrating the raw, imperfect beauty of real musicianship. It’s not just about the songs; it’s about the journey and the collaboration. Each track has a unique flavor, reflecting the diverse talent involved, making the album a real testament to the craft of music-making.

Please tell us about your journey.

My journey has been one of stepping back to reset. After spending years with bands like Lowlander and Firefly Fringe, I hit a point where the passion I had for music started to fade, and I realized I was burnt out. It was time to focus on the things that mattered most— just finding balance again. During that time away, I had the chance to reevaluate what I wanted from music and life. It wasn’t about chasing success anymore; it was about getting back to creating for the pure love of it. When I was ready to return, I wasn’t looking to make something perfect or polished—I just wanted to reconnect with the joy of making music, and to do it with the people I care about.

What are the strategies that helped you become successful in your journey?

Staying true to what matters—both in life and in music—has been my guiding principle. After stepping back, I realized that authenticity and passion are far more important than following trends. Creating music that feels real, both to me and to the people I’m working with, has been key. The power of collaboration can’t be overstated—surrounding myself with musicians who share that same passion and trust allows us to create something far greater together than we ever could alone. Another important strategy was learning to embrace patience, to let things evolve naturally without rushing the process. With With Friends & Imperfections, it wasn’t about pushing for perfection, but about letting the music grow organically and enjoying every part of the journey.
