I’m S.A. Cervantes, a fantasy author drawn to stories about divided worlds, inherited conflict, and people brave enough to challenge the beliefs they were raised to accept. My writing blends romance, adventure, mystery, and emotional tension, often placing ordinary acts of courage at the center of extraordinary circumstances.
Please tell us about your debut Novella.
My debut novella, The Silver and the Ash: Where the Light Breaks, follows two characters from opposing kingdoms who begin questioning the histories that have kept their people at war. Through their journey, I explore themes of loyalty, belonging, prejudice, sacrifice, and the difficult choice to pursue peace when hatred has become tradition.
I’m especially interested in the space between good and evil. Rather than creating worlds where one side is entirely right, and the other is entirely wrong, I write characters who discover that the truth is more complicated than the stories they inherited. Their courage may require them to disappoint their families, defy their leaders, or cross boundaries that were never meant to be crossed.
My stories focus on emotional consequences as much as magical danger. I want enchanted forests, ancient relics, warring kingdoms, and dangerous journeys to feel exciting, but I also want the characters’ struggles with trust, grief, identity, and hope to feel real.
The Silver and the Ash is the first entry in The Shortspell Novellas, a collection of short, standalone fantasy stories. Each novella introduces its own world, characters, and conflict, giving readers a complete fantasy adventure in a shorter format. Although the stories aren’t directly connected, they share my interest in atmospheric settings, meaningful relationships, hidden histories, and characters searching for a place where they truly belong.
What are the strategies that helped you become successful in your journey?
I write for readers who enjoy fantasy with heart. My stories combine magic, romance, mystery, and high-stakes conflict with quieter moments of connection. Romance may play an important role, but it exists alongside questions about power, responsibility, family, and the legacies people choose either to preserve or break.
At the center of my work is the belief that even deeply divided people can find common ground, though reconciliation is rarely quick or easy. I want my stories to acknowledge old wounds without surrendering to despair, leaving room for change, forgiveness, and new beginnings.
