An immortal figure burdened by the first recorded murder becomes humanity’s unlikely defender in Raising Cain. Written by Brian Artz, this dark supernatural thriller follows Cain through a world of Vatican control, bloodthirsty vampires, ancient suffering, and approaching catastrophe.
The independently published novel is available in Kindle and paperback editions on Amazon. Its combination of horror, action, fantasy, prophecy, and dark humor creates a dramatic adventure with emotional weight beneath its violent surface.
When an Eternal Punishment Becomes a New Mission
Cain has endured a seemingly endless existence since killing his brother Abel. He has crossed centuries, traveled through history, and experienced hell while carrying the consequences of his defining act. His punishment continues to shape his identity, leaving him consumed by memories that time has failed to weaken.
During his long journey, Cain falls under the authority of the Vatican. He is restrained and deployed as a weapon, turning his ancient strength into a tool for a powerful institution. That uneasy arrangement places him in a world where spiritual authority, secrecy, and supernatural violence are closely connected.
The story shifts when Cain encounters a woman and child being held at a vampire camp. He rescues them, setting in motion a chain of events that changes the direction of his existence. Their safety becomes his responsibility, giving him something immediate and deeply personal to defend.
The danger soon expands beyond one kidnapping. Cain discovers that he’s been drawn into a conflict connected to the apocalypse. Stopping the end of days will require him to confront brutal enemies and parts of his own history that remain painfully alive.
His response carries the force of centuries. Cain is prepared to unleash his rage and power for the people who have entered his life, even when doing so pushes him closer to the darkness within him.
An Intense Blend of Horror, Faith, and Action
The novel’s appeal begins with its unusual central character. Cain is widely remembered for betrayal and violence, while Brian imagines what endless punishment might have done to his mind, emotions, and understanding of humanity. The result is a protagonist whose frightening capabilities exist alongside guilt, loneliness, anger, and loyalty.
Vampires give the story a recognizable supernatural threat, yet their presence forms part of a wider struggle involving faith and prophecy. The Vatican’s connection to Cain adds another source of tension, especially as he attempts to act according to his own instincts after centuries of control.
Wisconsin provides a distinctive background for these events. Wausau and the Northwoods appear throughout the adventure, bringing supernatural terror into real locations. The regional setting strengthens the atmosphere and gives local readers an opportunity to see familiar surroundings transformed by danger.
Amber Gollon gave Raising Cain a five-star review and praised the story’s action, emotional stakes, unexpected twists, and dark humor. She also appreciated the use of Wisconsin locations, explaining that their inclusion made the supernatural adventure feel more immersive and authentic.
Another reader, Casey Braun, described the book as intense and difficult to put down. The review recommends it to fans of supernatural stories, reflecting the excitement generated by its pacing and escalating peril.
Behind the Storyteller
Brian is a Wisconsin-raised independent author with a lifelong passion for writing, music, and art. Raising Cain is his first released novel, beginning a creative journey that will continue through horror, supernatural horror, and dark fantasy.
He is a 40-year-old father of three who works full time and writes whenever an opportunity appears. His fiancée is his muse, while his family and friends remain important sources of encouragement. Music also plays a central role in his process, helping him find the energy and inspiration needed to develop his ideas.
Brian spent more than 20 years imagining stories before bringing his debut to readers. ADHD, anxiety, and depression affected his ability to pursue those ambitions for a long period. After finding greater stability and focus, he began turning decades of ideas into complete fictional worlds.
His love of horror, fantasy, thrillers, action, and supernatural storytelling guides his work. He approaches each novel as a personal creation and an unfiltered extension of himself.
A Powerful Start to a Dark Fiction Journey
Raising Cain places ancient guilt inside a modern supernatural crisis filled with vampires, secretive authority, rescued innocents, and apocalyptic consequences. Cain’s battle offers fierce action while exploring what centuries of pain might leave behind.
For readers who enjoy dark fantasy, religious mythology, morally complicated heroes, and horror rooted in recognizable places, Brian’s debut provides an imaginative escape. It also opens the door to future stories from an author finally bringing his long-held visions to life.
