We had the privilege of interviewing the author. Here are excerpts from the interview:
Thank you so much for joining us today! Please introduce yourself and tell us what you do.
My name is John Lane. I’m a writer and father from Sligo, Ireland, with a lifelong love for storytelling rooted in Irish myth and folklore. I write in the early hours and late nights, balancing work and family life with the need to put stories down on paper — stories that have lived in my head for years.
Please tell us about your Book.
Setanta and the Lady by the Water is a mythic, emotionally driven novella set in a modern but timeless Ireland. It follows a boy and his father on a journey through grief, memory, and legend, pursued by a banshee-like figure tied to a curse that spans generations. It’s dark, poetic, and deeply human — a blend of Irish folklore and coming-of-age drama that asks: what if the stories were true, just not in the way we thought?
Please tell us about your journey.
Writing this book began as therapy and turned into a calling. I’m a cancer survivor — and coming through that changed everything. When you face your own mortality, you realise the time to follow your dreams is now, not someday. Writing Setanta and the Lady by the Water was my way of honouring that second chance. I finally told the story I’d carried with me since I was a boy. It’s personal, it’s painful in places, but it’s the truest thing I’ve ever written.
What are the strategies that helped you become successful in your journey?
Discipline, vulnerability, and not waiting for the “perfect time.” I learned to write even when I didn’t feel ready. I allowed myself to be honest in the work — not just clever, but emotionally raw. I also surrounded myself with good feedback and didn’t shy away from critique. Every tough edit made the book stronger. But more than anything, I kept going. That’s the secret: keep going.
Any message for our readers?
You don’t have to wait for life to give you permission to tell your story. Sometimes hardship gives you the clearest voice. Use it. Whether you’re starting a paragraph or starting over — it’s never too late to begin.
Thank you so much, John, for giving us your precious time! We wish you all the best for your journey ahead!
