Joshua Mercer’s Novel ‘Orphans Pursuit’: A Tale of Power, Honor and Self-Discovery

Joshua Mercer’s first literary foray, Orphans Pursuit, melds fantasy with the narrative depth of a coming-of-age saga, setting the stage on the intriguing planet of Ethra. This novel not only serves as an entertainment piece but also engages readers in a profound exploration of identity and societal values through the eyes of its protagonist, Dustin. Let’s unravel the layers of Orphans Pursuit, examining its unique setting, captivating plot, and the personal touch brought by the author that makes this novel a standout in the genre.

Ethra: A Blend of the Familiar and the Fantastic

In Orphans Pursuit, the planet Ethra serves as a captivating backdrop, closely mirroring Earth but distinguished by its unique societal structure and antiquated technology reminiscent of the Civil War era. This setting is crucial as it shapes the societal expectations and cultural norms that Dustin, the young protagonist, must navigate. Ethra is characterized by a society that values honor highly, where people’s worth is often measured by their ability to contribute to the greater good.

This world is not just about picturesque landscapes or historical echoes; it’s also imbued with a magical aspect where characters possess powers. However, these are not your typical fantastical abilities but are more akin to heightened character traits that define and drive the inhabitants of Ethra. This nuanced portrayal of power dynamics sets the stage for Dustin’s personal growth and the challenges he encounters.

The Journey of Dustin: Seeking a Place to Belong

Central to the narrative is Dustin, an orphan whose upbringing is marred by the weight of expectations from his adoptive parents and the broader societal pressures of Ethra. His journey is a poignant tale of a young man’s quest for identity and purpose within a framework that values utility over individuality. From a tender age, Dustin has yearned for a significant power to prove his worth and not disappoint those who have raised him.

Encouraged by his friend Arra, Dustin aspires to join the Academy of Military and Power, seeing it as a pathway to secure his place and honor in society. His time at the Academy is not just about training but is also a deeper exploration of his own values, aspirations, and the realities of the world around him. This institution is where Dustin and his peers are prepared for the inevitable clash between two competing nations, and where Dustin’s resolve and character are truly tested.

Engaging Readers with Casual Fantasy

Joshua Mercer’s approach in Orphans Pursuit is particularly noteworthy for its accessibility. The novel is crafted to be a casual read, ideal for those new to the fantasy genre or for seasoned readers looking for a pleasant diversion without the complexity often associated with fantasy worlds. Despite its casual tone, the book delves deep into themes of self-discovery, the quest for belonging, and the moral dilemmas one faces when caught between personal desires and societal duties.

This accessible yet engaging narrative style ensures that Orphans Pursuit resonates with a broad audience, offering a story that is both easy to follow and emotionally engaging. Mercer’s storytelling prowess shines as he balances the simplicity of the narrative with the depth of its thematic undercurrents. The book can be pre-ordered from Barnes & Noble and Apple Books and is expected to be released on 29th August, 2024.

We had the privilege of interviewing Joshua Mercer. Here are excerpts from the interview.

Hi Joshua, It’s great to have you with us today! Please share about your book ‘Orphans Pursuit‘ with our readers.

Hi, this book was a passion project that I wrote as a learning experience for what it takes to write a fantasy. My goal was to write a coming-of-age book in a way that would be easy for readers to read and understand. I have a print copy of the book in the works that should be available before Christmas of 2024 if there are no delays.

I liked the idea of having the main character written in first person and then rewrote it in the first person perspective to give it a more personal perspective. This book has taken years to write, and I have gained a wealth of knowledge about what it takes to write fantasy.

What are the strategies that helped you become successful in your journey?

Listening to feedback and making changes to the editor’s comments, along with my wife’s critiques, helped. Leaning on books I love for inspiration and writing a story that I enjoy.

Any message for our readers?

To the readers, I would say expect another book in the series at some point. I have plans for multiple other series that I’m prioritizing now, and I plan on speeding up my writing significantly now that I feel confident about my ability to tell a story. All will be fantasy books. So stay tuned in the next year for more to come.

Thank you so much, Joshua, for giving us your precious time! We wish you all the best for your journey ahead!
